Check out the product on the Garmin Web site at
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=148&pID=101696 The site shows that it is compatible with the Blue Chart g2 Vision WILL work in the unit. The G2 Vision and their HOME PORT software make a great combination. The Home Port allows you to view the G2 program on your home computer as well as it allows you to transfer your waypoints and routes.
Only you can tell if the g2 Vision is worth the money you will have to pay for the program. I suggest that you visit a stocking Garmin dealer and view the actual software in a unit. It is Garmin’s premier mapping software, and is really a fine program. But, only you can make the decision. The g2 Vision is sold by areas. Be sure that you dope out the available areas and be sure that you get the right one. Software such as this g2 Vision is not a returnable item.
You may also want to look at the Garmin TOPO U.S. 24K Southeast DVD. It lists for $ 129.99 USD and can be used in the GPS 541. I prefer topo type maps for coastal marsh fishing as they offer a good more detail of the many intricate bayous, canals, lagoons and bays that make up our coastal marsh. It is sold by regions and the Southeast area covers all of Louisiana and Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. It is much more economical than the G2 Vision marine chart version.
Garmin’s Trip and Waypoint Manager or their HOME PORT software can be used with the unit. The trip and waypoint program will allow you to download updated OPERATING SOFTWARE for the unit and you can also transfer data via a spare SD memory card. The memory card is then placed in the unit and data or software upgraded operating software can then be transferred into the unit by means of the memory card.
There is usually a concern about updating the operating software as it causes the unit to loose all memory. That means that all routes, waypoints, and tracks will be lost. It is imperative to download all of that data from the unit to the memory card and into the Trip and Waypoint program prior to attempting to upgrade the operating software.
Check out the unit on the Garmin web site and if needed download the owners manual.
