Mapping and data transfer programs for a Garmin
~ Captain Paul's response to: ~ John Perrson ~
First, I do not have a scheduled Chag’s meeting. They may be confusing me with someone else. And second, I am NOT affiliated with Lowrance. And third, I could not find a Garmin 561 designation on any of their units. At least they don’t list such a model on their web site.
I mention this because different Garmin units use different accessory mapping products. Garmin offers several mapping products for their units that include MAPSOURCE, which is similar to the Lowrance MapCreate and other Garmin mapping products.
First, you will have to decide on what type of mapping software you need to illustrate the areas that you fish with sufficient detail for your needs. It is possible that the mapping program will have the data transfer program included but it may not. If not you will have to get a data transfer program, that, much as your Lowrance MapCreate, can mark and transfer routes, tracks and waypoints to and from your computer and the GPS unit. Garmin offers several one of which is FREE and called BASE CAMP from their web site. The others, MAPSOURCE, TRIP and WAYPOINT MANAGER, and HOME PORT are for sale by Garmin.
Select the map program first, and then determine if you need the data transfer program.
From what you describe, your expedition departed from the Lake Borgne to Bayou La Loutre on Bayou St. Malo by turning into Bayou Alphonse or possibly Bayou Guyago. Evidently the Base Map in your unit was not detailed to indicate the twisting in Bayou St. Malo.
Get back with me on your unit and I will be able to advise you in a more complete manner.
