This drake blue-winged teal was all alone in the blue-green water of the Gulf.
Lost Teal?
I came across this guy on Friday kayak fishing in the Gulf about a mile off of the coast of Perdido Key, Florida. While trolling around, I was looking for birds, but this was not what I expected!
A drake Blue-winged teal was bobbing along the waves in the open Gulf. As I got closer to snap a pic, he just swam a little faster. I thought he might be hurt, but as I got closer, he jumped up and flew away.
Perhaps he was coming from wintering grounds in Mexico or South America and just took a pit stop on his way back north.

How did the fishing end up? I wouldn't mind making my way over there to give it a shot...

Slow
The fishing was pretty slow. Despite a friend's catch last week of several nice Kings and a missed Cobia, we only managed to find some nice Spanish and Bluefish. My friend had one drag-screaming run that was likely a King, but it just kept going. On the way in, we spotted one small Cobia cruising the first sandbar, but it quickly disappeared with no shot.
We pedaled from Johnson Beach all the way to the Flora Bama. It's still a little early for the big King runs, but as soon as the bait shows up on the beach, they will be thick.
