In the warm months, the ponds closer to higher salinity or deeper water usually have less grass. Taking grass off your hook every cast is a pain and unproductive for catching (but good for the estuary). Second, use dead shrimp under a cork. Less chance of a grassball, just let it sit and the reds wlil scent it out. While lures can be productive, they require a certain amount of skill and practice for reds. To keep the fire burning, one needs to catch fish first, and that means using bait.
You can always migrate to lures later after finding some good red spots and getting some experience, if you wish. I personally find lures for reds a waste of time, but many people on this site will disagree, and that's fine, keeps life interesting.
