it always cracks me up to see people ask questions on here about the law, you might get lucky and have a game warden on here to answer your question, but the chances are slim, your best bet is to read the hunting book, every question you asked here are answered in there, if you are in doubt or unsure of something, pick up the phone and call the office in charge of the area you are looking at, not trying to come off as a hard____, but if you get a ticket for something, try using the excuse well a la. sportsman user said that it was ok for me to do this
You can only hunt them in WMA from Sept. 1st through the last day of Feb. You can only use firearms specific to whatever season (INSIDE THAT WMA)it is. Only during Modern Firearm can you use whatever gun you chose. Any other season outside modern firearm you will find it is Squirrel season so you can legally use a rimfire no larger than a 22 or a shotgun with no larger than shot BB (.117 caliber)lead, or Shot F steel. So a .22 magnum is your best bet for hogs inside WMA's in my opinion unless it is Modern Firearm season. There are however a few WMA's that have a special shotgun season that will allow you to hunt the month of march, check the regulations guide for the list of those WMAs. Also, in some WMAs there is a special hog dog season in the month of February and with a permit from the LDWF you can have any caliber pistol while dog hunting only. I have called and checked all this information out with the Baton Rouge and New Orleans W&F Departments. If you have more specifics questions about hog hunting in WMAs just ask; I have probably already called to asked the wildlife and fisheries supervisors any questions before to verify my understanding of the regulations handbook.
You cannot hunt hogs on WMAs during spring squirrel season. And as far as night hunting hogs anytime on a WMA, it would be a great way to end up in jail. You are not even allowed to enter a WMA before 4 A.M. and must exit before i think two or so hours after sunset; unless there is some special season or event going on in that particular WMA of course.
Everything I stated comes straight from the handbook and what I could not make clear understanding of from the regulations handbook I called to find out from the wildlife agents. I agree read the handbook and all your questions can be answered; but since he asked a question that I already am positive of the answer through research why not answer it for him? I see nothing funny about that.
You can hunt hogs at selected WMAs during the spring season. For example, at the Atchafalaya Delta WMA, you can hunt them with bows or the same weapons used on rabbits through February. Beginning Feb 16th thru the end of March you can hunt them with buck shot or slugs fired from a shotgun.
You can use whatever caliber that is legal at the time to kill hogs. For example: Squirrel season (rim fire, or shotgun with fine shot) Deer Season (High powered rifle, Shotgun with slug or buckshot) Primative weapons and archery seasons are the same. The season starts Oct 1st and ends the last day of february. You have until feb 29th to hunt this year the rest of the season is rimfire or squirrel shot. You may also be able to hunt them during the spring squirrel season but I am not sure.
