Man he was really pretty in that green field, however as u know i wasnt bear hunting.lol Rather see him in the off season than disturbing my deer.lol Saw him twice in Serena's stand. While he doesnt 'run the deer off', they are wary of him and dont come out as much when he's there. I saw him at least 10 times, surprisingly, Kim never saw him once, but she was ok with that. Last year when he climbed on her ladder she got over the deal.lol
I know seeing one on stand wont help the deer hunting that afternoon but id still like to see a wild one in Louisiana while on stand----how things been? I been having some honey dos the past two weekends but think Im gonna get out with my bow one last time this weekend. Huntin season always slips by so fast.
Once again saw him this evening almost dark. The deer ignored him cause they were so busy trying to keep away from a shorthorn spike that still thinks the rut is on. He came out on far end and came and chased a doe on my end, then stood in the middle of the field till one came out on the far end, and took off after her.
Hunted with my wife this evening to try and get her first muzzleloader deer. As usual deer come out 250yds. away and feed toward our end. 10 does and 7 bucks feeding when out comes the bear. When he came in sight about 75yds. from one group, the largest buck,7pt.(seen him several times but first time i ever saw him eat anything) looked up, flicked his tail, and went back to browsing. As the bear got closer, one of the young deer looked up, saw him and bolted for the woods. In an instant nuthin left but the bear. Still limping on his left foot.
Man i thought i was the only one that did that, and i can only type with one finger.lol They are not much of a problem and worth it to see one in the wild. They are very shy and hard to see. I've never seen one come eat in my foodplot like this, but i dont usualy plant wheat. He grazes it just like the deer, even tho we have both acorns and pecans left like everyone else that are uneaten. Maybe because of his sore foot its some kinda tonic. This bear has grown up on this land and is about 16-18yrs old, i dont know the lifespan of a louisiana wild bear. I remember the first track i found, i was so excited i covered it up so rain wouldnt wash it out and showed people for months. Now i find them everyday.
I hope you guy's don't get over run with bear on your lease. We are knee deep in them in the spillway. A large Bear population makes it extremely hard to deer hunt. You get enough of them you'll find bear in your food plots everyday. You can forget corn, rice brand, or anything else. They will also bite the seat on your 4 wheeler or tear your camp up. You put kid's on a stand it's hard to hunt worrying if a bear will try to climb the tree they are in.
Thanks for ur concern, ilovedeer, but its way too late for that. I've had everything u just said and more happen. One scratched holes in my trailer tire like a cat sharpening its claws. However, we bought this land BECAUSE it had bears. Today i got on my 4wheeler and went to a cane thicket with a grounblind we call the 'bearhouse' cause of frequent sightings. Soon as i stopped the cane and palmetto started popping and out jumped a huge injured bear! He was popping his teeth and growling from no more than 15 ft.! I was franticaly trying to get my bike started. Suddenly he lunged and grabbed my :), i'm kidding, he hit the road and took off the other way, still limping. Its hard to believe i would ride straight to him like that, but thats the way its been this year. Last year he took my wifes 9pt.,220lb buck from the skinning rack and walked off with it without a trace, and it was 18 degrees out!
I have nothing personally against a bear. What I'm trying to say is we are paying top dollar to deer hunt even though I own the property. When you get in a stand on a cold afternoon you see three or more bear then you slip out of that stand to another. When you get all settled in this spot I see another bear. There is so many bear you get tired of looking at bear and the deer stay spooked. They graze in your food plots like cows, bite holes in your 4 wheeler, tare your camp up, pull limbs down on tree saplings. The LDWF offers no help. It's time for a bear season to help manage the numbers just as they do deer. I even tried to lease my property but the first question people in the area ask is do you have bear.
Thanks for the pictures. I would love to see one in the wild in Louisiana or South Mississippi . A friend got some pics on a game cam close to I55 in North Tangipahoa Parish a few years ago. LDWF said the blue tracking collar on him had stopped working and that he had last been seen in Bossier Parish . I ;however, only saw the pics . id hate them to disturb my hunting like someones beagles did most of the year. The beagles were some good cold trailers of rabbits.I never saw them jump one or run a rabbit ,but they were noisy and hurt my deer chances greatly. They never did run a deer that i saw.
Thanks turkeyhunter, they do cause some minor trouble but the thrill of seeing one more than makes up for it. Just like a lot of things that sound good when u say them fast enough, when some jumped on the save the bear wagon, they had very little knowledge of bears. Sadly they are unable to be 'wild'. They're just like a stray dog hanging around, always hungry but not really wild enuf to run off. They have very poor eyesight and show very little concern with whats happening around them unless its very close. The state has petitioned to remove them from the esl so we can hunt them, but after the first season that would be the end of the huntable pop.
Hi huntr, thats awesome! Id like to see one of those on stand sometime ---Very cool. Those plots sure greened up nice huh? Even with a late start. Hope you and Mrs Huntr are doing good, kiddos say hello, Be cool
