Fishing in Lafitte in Southeast Louisiana

people cant slow down

So I am going to open a can of worms. Yesterday I was fishing in Lafitte, 5 min from boat launch in my bass boat. I had a guy with alabama numbers pass me 25 feet off my bow in a 24 ranger bay boat going 25 to 30 mph, he put a wave over my bow, I have his numbers and video taped him when he passed later, he slowed down this time cause i told him he's getting reported, I had several other boats meaning every freaking moron oout there not slow down, they either plow by or speed by regardless, they are less 100 ft from my boat. This is ridiculous, to top it off I watched a guy who slowed down for me and another guy fishing have a guy in a trihull pass 15 feet to his port side. This is outrageous, I will film everyone doing this from now on and turn you in. People have no rrespect out there. i called wildlife enforcement about two weeks ago cause of the same problem except it was in barataria waterway by the shrimp processing plant, i was anchoring 30 ft off the dock and no one slowed down in fact they sped by me closer. Ridiculous. Wildlife said in lafitte the only rule is no wake 300ft from a boat launch. Well that definitly is not enforced try launching at goose bayou or Joes guaruanteed to have your boat slammed around. So I was told that if I get waved out by someone, if it damages my boat or hurts someone on my boat thye are solely responsoble but you need a witness or a video camera. Well yesterday I had both, and I promise anyone who waves me out will get a ticket in the mail. I'm tired of it I go fishing where there shouldn't be any 2-3 foot waves coming over my bow and there are. I have a bad back and love lafitte I catch alotta bass out there and won't stop going. But if you find yourself on candid camera, you better check your mail box cause you are getting a ticket. Simple Solution guys : SLOW DOWN TO A DEAD IDLE, I have a 65mph bass boat and I slow for other boats, there are no fish that need to be 1 minute sooner. Hope I don't film you cause tickets aren't cheap. Just ask Mr. Alabama in a few days.

No Way

That is impossible. The way most people on this site think, you must be lying! It's only the guys in bass boats that fly by everyone. Oh yeah, because you have a fast bass boat, you also have a shirt with your name on it covered in patches too....

For those of you that need the help, that was all sarcasm.

Get a bigger boat with high sides?

Good luck with your pursuit.

we fished dulac the other day in the main canal, and we got buzzed all morning. i had never been there before. we caught plenty of reds despite the waves. it is aggravating but its just the price you pay for fishing the main drags.

Look dude, I fish alot in lafitte, and this is a common thing, if i'm in barataria waterway I don't expect you to slow down if your a resonable distance away. But these guys are passing casting distance or less on plane or plowing, that doesn't make any sense. Secondly the occurence yesterday was in a canal off of bayou dupont, its no wider than 80 feet, but i guess i was wrong for fishing there and he had the right to swamp. Guys like you are impatient and have no respect. I was taught to slow down for others, not wave them out, that is respect. People like this obviously think they are better than everybody else and don't have to slow down, well that ridiculous. I will continue to stir this pot and report everyone that flies by me that close to wildlife and fisheries. All I really ask is if you have to pass 50 feet from someone be respectful and slow down, or is that too much to ask. It take 2 min of your time or less and you everyone else's life more pleasent but I guess you think you have to get asap and slowing down for someone is too hard. For the record I have an 18 bass boat and the bow stands over 2 feet off the water I don't need a bigger boat to fish freaking bayou dupont.

Bayou Dupont is a Interstate road fact

Please don't get upset with me but I would just fish and have fun and know that on a week end you are going to have speeding boats in Bayou Dupont this is a fact sounds like you did have a great day catching bass. Now try this Lafitte trick parking your bass boat at CWAY or Joe's and try to fill up with gas on the week end.

I'm not mad at you I understand its a busy place I've been fishing it for ten years, I usaully fish during the week and no one slows then either. Also I launch at C&M for a reason, there are no waves, I am no stranger to Lafitte it just seems like it is getting worse and worse, I just can't understand why people can't slow down for 2 mins. I mean its everyone, charter, commercial fisherman, recs, and crewboats. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. By the way people should slow down for Joes and C-way, cause there is a 300ft rule that is not enforced.

i wish they would have a law against, not slowing down for a boat anchored, trolling and fishing!! also, when a boat is tied up to a wharf at a camp!!! its like you said, people just don't care and have no common sense! i bet you right now, $100, a lot of the people who don't slow down, probably get teed off when someone does it to them, go figure!! i'm 100% behind you, burn them if you can!!! i guess before a law is passed, it will take someone being knocked out the boat and drown!!

thats the reason i honestly stopped fishing lafitte after fishing there my whole childhood. this is also the reason i stopped trout fishing. people dont even slow down when passing under the bridge at goose bayou marina. now i just fish reds in places most boats cant even troll or i bowfish at night to be away from all the crowds. i'll just stay in the shallow ponds away from the crowds. i like it better anyway.

i know about that law! i mean, if an agent sees you pass to close to someone without slowing down or if you get them on video and throw a large wake, they can issue a ticket!! that's the only way some people will stop doing it!!! i know, more laws suck and i agree! but sometimes, things need to be done, like it or not!

drew-b, here's your answers!!

if you were 300 feet from me in a lake and you were driving the queen mary at full steam ahead and threw a large wake, yes, of course you should get a ticket!!! also, if i was in a 36 foot pleasure boat and you were in a 10 foot john boat with an f-16 jet engine on it at full throttle, yes, you defintely should slow down!!! it,s just a thought, yes, i'm having one!!! maybe quit taking things to extremes and try to start using a little common sense, for a change!!!! hope this helped!!!!

when i'm fishing sometimes people slow down sometimes they don't. it doesent bother me either way, but just wave to the people who do and make a nasty face or kindly flip off the ones who don't and then kick back and enjoy the rest of your day fishing. because remember you could be at work or putting up fall decorations with your ol'lady!!

common sense

You can not legislate common sense or courtesy .
It doesn't cost anything to be courteous and nice no matter where you are . It can cost a lot from not acting that way or retaliating against someone who wasn't and it is seldom worth it either way .

Agreed with a Caveat

I totally agree that people now a days r just not that damn courteous and u r correct, this goes for the 'so called professionals' as well as the rec guys.
My rule: whenever possible I will slow down (no continuous wake) off a plain in a narrow bayou.

My ONE EXCEPTION: When a yo-yo is anchored on a MAIN navigable waterway and during the range of tide said waterway is only navigable when vessels of shallow to medium shallow draft can navigate safetly only while on plain!!!
I have seen so many boats anchored and casting into the only channel that serves as the only access to open water.. Of course u try to be polite and slow or stop if possible but I now have a loud speaker mounted to my VHF and will let them know my thoughts. Damn people, it's not like u r going to catch anything with 50 boats passing and ur casting in their wakes into 8 inches of water. Thx.

Are we having fun yet

Letís talk about it. This week lets see the guy pulls his boat out the landing but leaves it parked so no one can use it. He wants to fix a strap. Another backs down with his lights on and blinds anyone trying to back down. Pull up to the marina to gas up an the worker looks the other way when he could help tie up the boat and give you the gas pump so that you would not have to leave the boat. Boat goes by with 3 250 motors throwing a tidal wave but he was slowing down. Two guys pull in front and anchor as we troll down the bank if he waited 2min we would have been 200 yards out of his way. Common sense only a word with no means on the water.

This one is very hard to say what should be done.
I would hope that ev1 would have enough common sense to slow down if possibl. But i know that's a pipe dream.
Now if a boat owner is responsible for damage caused by his wake, who decides what is damage?
I understand if someone is thrown from or into the boat and is injured or if a boat is tossed against a pier or seawall and shows phisical damage.,
But if some one comes by and throwes a wake and you get water in your boat and get a wet Butt,Is this damage or is it an inconveniance?? Hard to prove in court that you were damaged by being wet.
I would want to claim it would be damage if it was my boat getting wet. but i'd make someone else prove it if i got a ticket by photo and affidavit .

Dont anchor in middle of channel

Just don't anchor in the middle of the channel. fished Biloxi Marsh saturday and on way back someone decided to anchor dead smack in the middle of the channel that leads from stump to the interior biloxi marsh. Thought about slowing down but he anchored in the deepest part, Gets shallow to the sides. Ran full throttle to the left side and this guy gives me one of those looks. Well I guess i'll have to live with it.

common sense

Samurai has it right. There are some spots you can't slow down. That northern entrance in Stump is shallow on both sides and, even worse, loaded with stumps (my motor has found them when made the mistake of slowing down and idling past some idjut anchoring there right in the middle). I don't slow down there anymore. Yes, this will make a rookie mad but they don't understand the situation at this spot. There are plenty of other places to fish, and some people just have to learn the hard way, you're not going to catch fish there because of the boat traffic anyway.

Overall, my rule of thumb is to slow down past another boat if its in a secluded area or very close, and to stay on plane but keep my distance in traffic areas (that actually leaves no wake and will spook the fish the least, but rookies don't understand that.) Then, there are some areas ones must stay on plane out of necessity no matter what.

Also, if people fish navigation canals and major bayous near a launch, they have to expect boat traffic. Its best to avoid those areas in our vast marsh, and you will also catch more fish too.
