Not sure what you mean by staying safe? we are not in bear country! Make sure you bring a tarp and put on ground under tent, make sure you set up your tent before you go camping(if its new)and spray with starch, that will keep you dry.Other than that just dont leave anything out you dont want stolen while your gone!
...I hunted w/a grand old WWII landing craft operator who tented out only once below 'Point A'la La Hachee'...they took the tent even the tent stakes plus his upper plate which he could'n wear because of his tobacco chew'n !!!...he grumble in French about it for over 30 years...I heard about it on every trip we ever made for the entire 30 grand years we hunted !!!...cheers
But for the life of me, I can not understand how a man,(thief), has the gonads or mentality to steal from a hunting tent/camp/trailer.....But yet it happens all the time, all parts of the country. I can't fathom how a thief, knowing that hunters are armed to the teeth, and perhaps, just maybe, the hunter may have walked in the woods from his camp/tent and could very well be within sight of his tent while the theiving was going on...
Tents don't have locking doors therefore offering an easier target.
Nothing is more miserable than 4 inches of water in the floor of the tent..... use the ground tarp as mentioned and I trench a rain drain around and away from mine when set up.

As far as i know all the public wmas have a restriction that you must camp in designated areas.
Don't leave anything out while you are hunting or away from the camping area and you should be good.
