If you go buy shrimp. You can get 40 lbs of shrimp iced down adequatly and top off a 48 quart ice chest. Shrimp are heavier than fish. The shrimpers use a brine tank to separate shrimp from fish. The Shrimp sink and the fish float in the salt bath.
Probably 35-38 lbs to totally fill up 48 quart ice chest properly iced.
I had a commerical lic. and the best you can do is about 48 pounds of fish in a 48q and that is on the high end. Reason I ask the question you see guys with 2 chest and they say they have 50 trout in the chests that average 3 pounds der not so. Like someone posted just purchase some shrimp and this will surprise you.
I have been in this scenario before. One limit of trout averaging 2.5 to 3lbs each, with a few over 5lbs will never fit in a 48quart or a 50quart. you will be lucky to get 17 fish in that thing. i had to hike a levee back with a rolling cooler with 10 fish dragging in the landing net that couldnt fit in the cooler.
depend who you talk to. Lets se ahah 100 trout at 2 to 5 pouns 3+8-pies+apples-shrimp= 300 or 100 trout at an average of less than a pound 70 pounds.
