Crab Traps

Anyone ever use the 1/2 size crab traps. I'm looking to get some to set in the bayou by my house, mainly for the kids, and I will be tying them to something instead of floats to keep them from getting stolen. They sure would be a lot easier to store and travel with but if they don't catch crabs well I don't need them. Thanks, Wayne.

Crab traps

I purchased the 1/2 traps and ran them right along side my friends full traps and he caught at least 3 to 1 over me. Crabs get out of half traps. I use the half traps when we use to go surf fishing near Grand Isle with good results when running every two hours but they have millions of crabs there. My full traps catch twice as much as my friends full traps do now. If your near Metairie shoot me an e-mail as one of my friend builds great traps for a great price and i can hook u up.

Thanks BigJim. That's what I had heard from a few other people, just wanted a few more opinions. Yea I need to get some traps, I got a commercial guy who can get me the ones he uses for 31.00 a trap fully rigged with rebar, 25 ft of line and float. Gus has heavy duty traps in slidell for 24.00 unrigged. I probably won't use a float because I'm worried about someone stealing the traps, I'll probably just tie to a log or piece of bamboo. If you got any info you can email it to me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Wayne.

be careful you don't get caught. Regulations state you must have a 6' float attached. Even if you run them trotline style, one end must have a float.

Thanks for the info. I realize about the float but I also realize how often 30.00 traps get stolen. Chris you can also get a lifetime recreational crab gear license for 150.00. I also know you need tags with license number on them.

Another reg you might want to check out....
I do not believe you can set the traps in a bayou.
The reg states:
No crab traps shall be set in
navigable channels or entrances to

Just FYI. Not sure where you plan on putting them, just thought I'd add that comment.

You can set crab traps in bayous but they must not impede boat traffic. They must be on the shoulder of the bayou.
