deer from joyce WMA
Man seeing that picture brings back memories! I now live in central Louisiana/ avoyells parish but I grew up hunting in Joyce and have seen some incredable deer come out of this place. No matter where you go it's hard hunting. You can also access this place from the hwy 51 canal and come in the back side up wineburger canal. No matter where I ever went in this place you will always run into Bruce Mitchell and the Hano boys.. Bring a compass and a back up compass. This is a earry place in the dark, especially if your wet and there is gator holes everywhere. I think the thing I miss the most is just walking on the floton.. It's like a huge waterbed of grass. If you can find the island you are guranteed a deer 'if' you want to drag out that far. My friend mike stortz and I used to walk for miles.. Good luck guys and nice buck!!
Do y'all remember the amazing numbers of mallars in this place!? Was absolutely one of the best mallard swamps of all time, from Bedico Creek to the Cypress Club on the west side of hwy. 51. Old Fred Parnell had a blind about one foot outside of the WMA, I remember one day i'm walking off a slough north of North Pass, picked up a trail of feathers for about a mile til I found his blind. They'd been plucking 'em the whole way out LOL! Also remember pulling myself out of bottomless holes by grabbing on to any kind of branch or limb or stump - I'm telling you there are some hat-floaters out there!! Y'all remember that guy that went in at Kliebert's ditch and never came out? I think they found his truck, his pirogue and some clothes in the swamp and that was it.
I remember hunting the mallards buy listening for them. You'd walk into the wind, listening for them, and walk forever sometimes until you jumped them, then wait for them to come back. One day we went as far as we could go up Middle Bayou, walked off ofto the northwest, following what sounded like they were 'just around the next bend' for 30 minutes, finally got to them just across an old mainline, thinking all the time we've found the Holy Grail, the 'secret' spot so far in that no one else knew about, only to find a hunting camp LOL! Talk about a let-down! What a hole those guys must have had!
Does anyone ever duck hunt in there anymore?
I have been hunting joyce for 20 years. It was great! Last year i hunted almost everyday. Only seen one deer on JAN6. High water and outlaws spoild it! A bunch of pics of deer are killed in high water (WHAT A HUNTER).The state sould have closed joyce in high water. IT WILL TAKE YEARS TO GET BACK RIGHT! I would not waste your time in (THE GAR HOLE).
that deerlooks like a hybrid between a whitetail and cape buffalo. but great kill congrats !
