A few years back a man and his son were bass fishing in a boat in the Pearl near Bogalusa. Another father and son were deer hunting and the son shot the boy in the boat for a hog, killing him. The shooter claimed it was not his fault because the boy in the boat had no hunter orange on. Most people don't even know when deer season is open and people are in the outdoors doing many activities. I was always taught it was the shooters responsibility to know what he was aiming at but again down here in the south killing a deer is the most important thing in life to some people.
why should the fisherman wear orange if you can't see CLEARLY WHAT IT IS DON'T RAISE THE GUN if you can't tell if it has four legs and horns how can you tell its a buck IF YOU DON'T HUNT WITH THIS ATTIDUDE YOU DON'T DESERVE TO CARY A GUN YOU ARE DANGEROUS AND ANYONE ELSE LIKE YOU YOU NEED TO STAY HOME
...most boats I had was w/a radio...at the end of the antenna was 3 or 4 ft of orange florescent tape flagging in 'da wind !!!...if you don't have a antenna the same tape tied to a clothesspin clipped to a rod tip sitting in the holder almost 10 ft above the water works just as well...every little bit in the pursuit of brains helps too...cheers
to clarify: we always only have either shotguns or unscoped rimfire rifles, so our range is not too far. my story was in the matter of maybe a minute from when we saw the hog like image to realizing it was a man wearing all black. Im not blaming this guy for wearing black clothes, just simply saying I wouldnt do that. I always try to idiot-proof everything.
Since the boy was shot in the river @ Bogalusa a few years back all my fishing friends wear a hunter orange cap starting in the fall. I t's a wonder one of the May-Haw crowd hasn't been shot for a bear (shaking the trees). Your right there are a lot of idiots out there with a gun that sincerely believe its your responsibility to protect yourself from them.
The only reason we have hunter orange laws is because some people are stupid. If you are shooting at a deer or a hog and cant tell what part of the animal you are shooting at you shouldn't be shooting.
Orange helps but you can't cure stupid and now with people thinking everyone will have orange on, makes it quadruple as dangerous for anyone that isn't hunting and not wearing blaze orange.
Be smart people, wear the orange even if you aren't hunting. Sad it has come to this. You can walk around me while I am hunting and not need to fear for your life even without blaze orange. Most but not all people are that way unfortunately.
fish can see you sitting in the boat and especially in clear water so wearing bright colors or hunter orange might help hunters see you but it also might make those reds stay out of casting range as well.
the more you wear colors like white grey or light blue to blend in with the sky background the less you spook fish, especially tailing redfish in the marsh where you are most likely to end up near hunters if you are in a hunting area so dont forget about that.
i find its much better to just give a shout out once and a while, hunters will let you know if they are there and a momentary shout wont scatter the fish if you are not near any hunters.
I don't know what goes through peoples minds these days. My dad always tought me as a kid and I have seen it myself as I grew older. Never shoot at anything unless you absolutely know what it is your shooting at. There are some hunters who simply do not wear hunters orange. We as fellow hunters can not stop it but can use the knowledge that was tought to us to prevent any major accidents or deaths by hunting like sportsman and not like scavangers. Hope I don't offend anyone this is just my opinion.
I have one of 2 sons that hunts. I taught him early on that no deer walked on 2 feet/carried a rifle or was 6 ft tall--SO he better be damn sure of his target and ALL gobblers heads were different than hens and be sure of the beard. He knows I have been stalked by other turkey hunters. He knows not to move but to say HELLO in a loud voice if someone gets close to him.
THAT SAID, I wear an orange cap in my boat while fishing . Other boat operators see it quickly and slow and give me a wide berth . If I should break down I will be easier to spot too. Maybe Im just an old man .
I beleive, many year's ago, a fisherman was actually shot by a hunter or hunter's who 'thought' they were shooting a hog/pig in the Honey Island Swamp area near Pearl River.
Everyone need's to be aware of their intended target and what's actually behing it as well, regardless of the Hunter orange requirement for 'Hunter's'.
