Bass Fishing Lacassine Pool in Southwest Louisiana

Lacassine
A friend of mine stopped and talked to a Game Warden the other night. The Warden said it's not set in stone yet but they are looking into allowing 40hp motors in Lacassine this spring. If that happens I'll be a little upset since I recently bought a 50hp, but I guess I'll be back to stealing my dad's boat again!

Inshore Fishing Rockefeller Refuge in Southwest Louisiana

Rockefeller/crabs & reds????
I was wondering if anyone has been to the refuge lately? I will be flying home from work in about a week. My wife has been wanting to go crabing and im interested in trying for a few reds, might be taking a couple friends also. I usually launch my boat and head to cuts and the cement overflows and start from there. Id like to hear some reports on it, thanks.

Captain Paul - GPS Info Southwest Louisiana

Toby Primeaux
Captain Paul, Is there a reliable website to monitor salanity levels for Vermilion Bay Southwest Pass area?? Any information would be greatly appreciated. My emai is primeatj@bp.com. Thanks in advance

VERMILLION BAY WATER CONDITIONS FROM AN OFFICIAL NOAA SITE
.

~ Captain Paul's response to: ~ Toby Primeaux ~

One of the most comprehensive sites for all types of data for the Vermillion Bay area is the Official NOAA water data web site.

It can be accessed at

http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=07387040

Paste the web info in your browser to view the site. Scroll down to the SALINITY section of the site for the information that you are requesting.

It is a real time accounting for conditions on the Vermillion Bay near the Cypremort Point area.

I suspect that the conditions for the Southwest Pass (Vermillion bay) area would have a higher salinity count than those published for the Cypremort area, especially if there is a pronounced southerly wind or an incoming tide.

The info however is a very good gauge of what a variety of conditions are in the lake.

~ Captain Paul ~

Freshwater Fishing Lacassine Pool in Southwest Louisiana

New Regulation for the Pool
Well, after hearing a rumor from a few friends I decided to call the Refuge headquarters to confirm. well, it is official they have raised the motor size limit to Lacassine pool. Now, you can have up to a 40 HP in the Pool. That ought to make a little more "madness" in the unit.

Inshore Fishing Calcasieu Lake in Southwest Louisiana

Headed to Lake Charles for some 'reconstruction'.
Any of you loyal readers want to go see a great show over in Lake Charles this week? There will also be some wagering courtesy of the L'auberge du Lac on the upcoming event. Odds opened at 3:1 JLT Via a really good friend still in Special Ops at Fort Polk, I have successfully honed in on a laptop used specifically to degrade those on Big Lake, the guides on Big Lake and the ownership of this great site. I intend to rectify that issue. Who Dat and Where YOU Stand?

Captain Paul - GPS Info Southwest Louisiana

Trevor Trahan
Dear Capt. Paul, I have a Hummingbird 580 fishfinder/chartplotter. I am wanting to buy your edge file for Big Lake. Will your program work with my gps? And are there any other programs I need to download to transfer it. My e-mail is lsufansr08@hotmail.com Thanks Trevor

HUMMINBIRD 580 DATA TRANSFERS
.

~ Captain Paul's response to: ~ TREVOR TRAHAN ~

The only thing that I can find is that the Humminbird 580 comes with the Humminbird UNIMAP. This mapping software covers the entire U.S.

Try calling the Humminbird support section at 1-800-633-1468 to see if there is any other more detailed mapping software available for the unit AND if you can transfer DATA such as waypoints to their Humminbird PC software. If you can transfer data to and from your unit then you can certainly use the CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE Files.

Humminbird offers the FREE data manager called Humminbird PC for Humminbird owners via their web site at http://www.humminbird.com/support/ProductRegistration.aspx
AFTER you register your unit.

The download lets you install the Humminbird program on your computer that will allow you to Update Unit software with MMC or SD card or via a direct connection and to Manage Tracks, Waypoints and Routes and to get your unit’s profile.

Once you have the software installed the download in your computer, simply order the EDGE file of your choice, save it to a folder, open the HumminbirdPC program and load it into the program. Then by using a card reader~ writer which would be also installed to your computer, you would write the file to a blank Secure Digital card by using the HumminbirdPC program.

Once the data file is written to the data card, the card is removed and placed in your Humminbird 788c unit and using the MENU feature of the unit save the waypoints to the internal waypoint memory of the unit.

Even if you don’t purchase the EDGE file(s) you should make an effort to get the HumminbirdPC download program installed in your computer. The PC program will allow you to transfer data, such as Routes, Tracks, and Waypoints to and from your GPS unit and your computer. This allows you to archive all of your waypoints in a computer file or on a CD disk. In addition it allows you to get updates to the operating software of your unit from Humminbird.

It is worth the effort!

When ordering the EDGE files be sure to indicate that it is for a HUMMINBIRD GPS SYSTEM.

The EDGE files are written in different protocols as required by the different manufacturers of GPS units. A Garmin file or maps will NOT work in a Humminbird or a Lowrance, etc. GPS system, and a Humminbird file will not work in the other systems.

~ Captain Paul ~

Reds, reds & more reds.
Made a quick trip this morning to the 1st set of weirs to catch a quick limit with a friend. I was throwing a chartreuse Nemire Red Ripper spoon & he was throwing white Gulp shrimp. We caught our limit in about 20 minutes & hung around until 10AM & ended up tagging 15 more.

Nice Big Lake Limit 2 to 8 lbs!!!! Big Lake Reds Nice one for Captain Tom

Redfish Biting on BigLake!!!!
There Seems to be a bit of interest on Redfishing Lake Calcasieu so I will post. The Redfishing has been great one day and tougher the next. The wind and rain are playing a strong role in the bite. Some days it's 70+ fish and the next the wind and tide will muddy things up and you work hard for a limit. On warm days the water temp will cross 60* and the fish will be on the east or south banks and they will eat up corkies or gulp under a cork and on cooler windy days(low Tides) they will move deeper and 1/4 oz jigs with Gulp white shrimp worked very slow on the bottom will do the trick? Please visit www.fishingtom.net to view more reports. Thanks Captain Tom Adams 318-675-9114
