Cat Island NWR
Hey guys,
Let me just start off by saying that I'm 17 years old, and looking for some public land to hunt ducks on. I don't have a boat, I do own an ATV though. Seeing that I'm located in Denham Springs, I was thinking about Cat Island NWR. Are there more than just Wood Ducks? If you guys have any advice to help a new duck hunter out, it would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Ryne

Why does the LDWF insist on such an early season?
I know the framework is set for so many years until the LDWF can change it again, but maybe the LDWF commissioners will listen to the duck hunters the next time they modify the structure of the seasons.
I have preached this for years. I sure would like to see duck season open the Saturday before Thanksgiving and let it close on the last weekend of January for both zones. I know duck season cannot extend into February, but our season in the west zone is opening way too early and closes too early in January.
Is it even necessary to have zones? And if we do have zones, shouldn't they be North and South and not East and West? The only valid excuse I hear for why the West Zone opens ..... Read More

West opener was lackluster, mixed reviews
I hunted opening day with Calvin Chaisson south of Houma with limited luck, bagging two teal and two mottled ducks from two hunters. Mosquitoes were horrible out there. Didn't see any pintail or mallards.
I got a decent report from Sabine NWR from Chris Cole and Mike Reagle, but compared to previous opening days, it was definitely a step down. Mostly gads and teal.
Damien Simoneaux did better than usual in the Little Prairie area, and told me earlier that it definitely surpassed the previous opener, and if the trend continues, should be a good season out that way. Limited out with teal and grays on the opener, and on Sunday, 3 hunters with 15 birds, pintail, teal, and grays.

How does WLF count ducks?
I just read that article on the LAS homepage about Louisiana's duck count for 2009 and it got me thinking... How do they count all those ducks? I just imagine a Farside sketch of WLF Agents standing at LA's borders going "There's a duck... there's a duck... That was 3 ducks, Frank, did you get those? There's a duck..." Please someone tell me there's not actually someone out in the field clicking a counter that goes up to 1.5 million... Haha. You kow you've wondered this too!

Opening Weekend
Opening weekend on our lease was pretty good. 3 hunters, 2 hunts (Sat and Sun morning)= 36 gadwall. I was happy as hell outright, then, after reading posts and talking to people, I was ecstatic. We didn't see hardly any birds, but almost everything we saw, tried to get in on us. Their mistake.

Dogs and Bell's Palsy
Anybody ever seen a dog with Bell's Palsy? If so, did it overcome it? My dog was diagnosed with it.
I thought his season was shot b/c of it. I worked with my dog yesterday throwing dummies and he was very energetic and in good spirits. He is getting older at age 9 so I must take it easy on him. He definitely has lost most vision (if not all) in his right eye from the Bell's Palsy. When I cover his left eye and wave my hand in front of his right eye he does not blink. If I throw a dummy to the his right eye only, he will not see it. Plus the vet said he is having vision problems with that eye.
Here are some pics of what the Bell's Palsy has done. The muscle and nerves above his righ ..... Read More

Louisiana Outfitters L.L.C.
Quick update from Southwest Louisiana. The ducks have been slow this week; the Teal shooting from the weekend did not stretch into this week. I had eight ducks yesterday morning. Mostly in the first 10 minutes. The duck situation should improve with opening of Arkansas waterfowl season Saturday. I have talked with a few hunters up there and they are loaded with ducks. When they start to put gun pressure on them this weekend, that should push lots of ducks down our way. Fortunately, we are still killing Specks consistently! With more moving into our properties the last few days. All 14 blinds rested this morning. We are booked for Saturday, but we do have openings for up to nine hunters Satur ..... Read More

Here's the reply I got from LDWF about the season times for duck hunting
The USFWS sets the "framework" within which each State can set hunting regulations. That framework includes the earliest date you can open, the latest date you can close, the length of the season, and the daily bag limits. States can be more restrictive, but they can not be more liberal than these frameworks. At this point, the latest ANYBODY's duck season can close is the last Sunday in January.
This year, that last Sunday is the 31rst, and that is when our East Zone closes. The West Zone closes a week earlier because it opens a week earlier in November to take advantage of early-migrating gadwalls, greenwings, shovelers, and pintails in the coastal marshes. But it doesn't have to b ..... Read More

BLACK MALLARDS
I 'm posting some photos of east coast black ducks in the wild. They are very rare down here. In 30 years of hunting, the only duck ever bagged that I can say was a black was'nt actually a full black duck; it was a hybrid mallard black. It had a dark body like a mottle duck and a solid green head. The body was'nt as dark as the birds in the photos, but it was definitely not the color of a mallard hen. Your bird is pretty dark for sure; you never know. The thin white bar on the bottom of the speculum is not a positive indicator. Black mallards and mottled ducks can both have that. Another issue regarding the black is that they have become so interbred with the mallard (Anas Platyrinch ..... Read More

From bad to WORSE
Just got the weather forecast for Saturday and it is not looking good. I was already hunting in standing water in my blind last weekend, and now with the low pressure system coming out of Texas tomorrow, the East and SE winds will pick up to 25 - 30 mph and tides are projected 3-4 ft above normal. Coastal flooding is expected from Cypremort Point west to Cameron. Add 2 - 3 inches of rain, with possible T-storms, and that makes for a bad situation. My go-devil sunk in October and I just put it back out for the season, and I pray it doesn't sink again...
If you go out in the midst of this storm system, be very careful guys.
