Venice Offshore-Pelagic Charters-Fat Tuna
After several weeks of strong easterlies and a brush with a tropical storm, the gulf laid flat like a pond, allowing for beautiful conditions. On Saturday I ran a trip for the Mexican Gulf Fishing Company. My crew consisted of a all star MLB line up that included hall of fame inductee Barry Larkin, formerly of the Cincinnati Reds. We rolled down the river at 50 m.p.h. and I never had to pull the throttles back once we hit the gulf. We started out wahoo fishing and only had a pull off to show for a serious effort. A capt. buddie hit me up on the radio that he had found some stud yellows and to get there quick. He was about fifteen miles away and in no time we pulled up to find his client bowe ..... Read More

Big Bull Red
Just caught a 41" Bull Red by accident will fishing from an offshore platform. It weighed in at 30lbs. We released it back in the gulf after weighing and measuring. The fish was caught on a live 12" sand trout.I was able to get this fish up using 80# test line, a helicopter rod, and Penn 330 GTI reel. I have caught alot of reds, but none this size. Anyone else has any other big bull red pictures out there? Sorry yall, someone hacked in my account to make me look stupid.

Ryan with his beast! One man show! Capt. Gray with the fish of the day

Meat Haul
On Monday Nov.16th I had Ryan Biscotto along with Capt. Josh Howard. This was the third try to make this trip due to illness and weather. It turns out the wait was well worth it. We started out the day running long in the flat seas. We caught some beautiful bait that Josh had found the day before and headed to several different spots but without much luck. We did managage to go 2 for 4 on dolphin but no tuna. It was getting late so we opted for plan B and it was definitely the right choice. After the dust settled Ryan had boated 2 dolphin, 23 stud Blackfin and 2 great Yellowfin. One was 100lbs and the other was his personal best at 133.5lbs This trip was an absolute blast! Thanks ag ..... Read More

One Open Boat for this weekend! Friday, Saturday and Sunday!! I am sending this report from my lap top so I do not have all of the pics from the weekend, I will post them as soon as I get a chance! I fished Sunday in my boat and then Fished with Capt Gray in the Cape Horn on Monday! Sunday I decided to make the long run in hopes that it would pay off big. I was able to find perfect bait and did get on some fish but they were so scattered it was hard to keep them going! We finished the day with a few yellowfin. Monday, we had one guy fishing and he was in for a treat! Capt Gray's Cape Horn was able to cruise at 50 mph all day, the seas were flat all weekend! We fished hard with o ..... Read More

James Kellum hooks up on a nice Cabo marlin One of many jumps from James' marlin Just before release

Cabo Marlin
Although the Cabo marlin bite should be red-hot now, the water is still a little too warm and the normal frenzy is about two weeks behind. We did manage to hook up with a couple and on our last day of fishing, my brother-in-law James Kellum landed a nice 150# Striped marlin. The marlin were around, but the bait balls were small and would only last a minute or two before the marlin would move on and reappear a couple hundred yards away. It was usually only one or two marlin feeding at a time. However, over the course of the day we saw about 30 all together. The lit up marlin in the clear blue water was an exciting sight to see. It was really pretty crazy as all the boats would con ..... Read More

Pelagic Charters
What a wild run with the weather the past two weeks has been. Last week I was able to get out offshore last Tuesday in not no nice seas. We ended the day with a hand full of wahoo with the biggest going 71 lbs along with some stud ajs that we returned back. There seemed to be alot of activity in the rough seas. Sea temps were hovering at 73 degrees. This past weekend I was able to Saturday and Sunday inshore with Charlie Behan and crew. The fishing was outstanding both days. Total take for five guys in two mornings fishing was 138 trout and 50 redfish. Anyway, we may have a much needed break in the weather this weekend and man do we need it. I have an opening for Friday offshore and Sunday i ..... Read More

Snapper vs no snapper
TO ALL THOSE THAT ENJOY OFFSHORE FISHING!! This pertains to recreational, commercial, charter, tackle shop owners, boat dealers, fishing groups, outdoor writers, outdoor broadcasters, etc. ARE YOU WONDERING WHY YOU ARE LOOSING YOUR RIGHT TO CATCH AND KEEP FISH IN THE GULF? Join together and attend some NMFS meetings where these decisions are made about your livelihood or favorite past time. Do you know that many times decisions are made without a single person present to counter the arguement? Some of those that make the decisions have never set foot in a boat much less fish. Your input may be just what is needed to help them make the right choices. There is an abundance of red snapper in the ..... Read More

Time to start getting involved - NMFS
OK ladies and gentlemen they shorten our snapper season and everyone gets mad, they close our amberjack season and everyone gets mad. Give it a few weeks and everyone starts to calm down and before you know it we are all sitting on the dock like a bunch of old timers talking about how we used to catch snapper or for that matter, how we used to fish offshore. My idea of “we need to get involved” means that we need to be involved in every step of the process. A quick history lesson may be in order ……… under the Bush administration the MSA was tweaked and reauthorized. Part of the act spelled out that by law the NMFS must have in place better accounting measures for our fish stocks ..... Read More

fishing the shrimp boats!
We have been fishing the shrimp boats for almost a month now! A lot of good fish have been taken during this time! I know of atleast one that went over 200 pounds! We fished them Monday with Ricky's Crew from Georgia. His family fished with us this summer, they landed a blue marlin and a nice pile of Yellowfin so they were pumped about going catch a big boy! We were able to find one boat, that was it, one boat! Started a slick, ran a line down and just that fast - FISH ON!! After about 20 mins or so, I knew that we were on a good one! We had fought the fish for about 30 mins when we felt the line pop! I think the teath from the tuna cut us off, the line was marked up about 3 inches u ..... Read More

AJ's Cuotas (Info from the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council’s (Council) rebuilding plan.)
Gents, Seen alot of responses to the AJ Quotas and request for more information, from which the season closure was based upon. Well here is some info and a link to the NOAA Fisheries Service's article from 2008..Seems as though it will be getting worse before it gets better. Wish this were not the case but here's the brief overview of info presented and a link: http://sero.nmfs.noaa.gov/sf/pdfs/Amendment%2030A%20FAQ.pdf Proposed Amendment 30A Management Measures: The most recent greater amberjack stock assessment indicates the stock continues to be overfished and is undergoing overfishing, compromising the objectives of the current Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council’s (Co ..... Big Fish!
Looks like we will have a break in the sea condition Sunday! Both boats are open, Sundays trips got pushed back to Monday! We will be fishing for huge yellowfin and blackfin tuna! Remember, this is the time of year that the wahoo start to show up! I use Braid Marauders, Mann stretch 30's, Bomber's dive baits and also have good luck with skirt baits and ballyhoo! Just remember, you dont want a ton of drag when fishing for wahoo. Fast retrieve reels helps as well! Capt Josh Howard 225-572-7408 deepsouthcharters@cox.net www.deepsouthcharters.com

Huge Yellowfin Tuna
The BIG FISH ARE HERE!! If you want to catch 100-200 pound yellowfin tuna, now is the time! We just started catching them good last week but the bite will only last about 3 more weeks!!! Thats it! Same thing every year in October! When they show up, we have 3-4 good weeks of fishing then that is it til winter! We have both boats almost completly open for the next four weeks and it is killing me knowing what I know about how long these fish will stick around! We had to move our trips for this weekend due to 8-10 ft seas, I will be fishing Tuesday then that is almost it, nothing much on the books for a while after that! Tuna Report
Don’t be afraid to book your trip…..As a matter of fact you might want to do it now! I know the word is out and YES it is true that the big yellowfin are here and here to stay the winter!! The only problem is like Capt. Josh Howard stated in his earlier post is that nobody wants to book a trip this time of year. My question is WHY NOT? Is it because of the weather? It doesn’t stop clients from booking a Lump trip starting December but ask any charter captain around and they will tell you that the big fish get here before Lump season! Capt. Dennis Sr. teamed up with Capt. Kevin and crew at Moran’s marina this past Wednesday but before they could clear Belle Pass they blew the port engine ..... Read More

Venice Offshore- Fall Bounty
The past week in Venice has been very cool indeed. Good fishing and good people always make for a good time. On Wednesday I had Fred Schmid and company in from Stuart, Florida for two days. They came highly qualified with lots of experience. Fred is still stoked from his 350lb yellow from PV two years ago! Our first day we took a shortcut and made about twenty or so baits quick, then plowed our way thru a 3-4ft head sea to our first stop. 30 minutes later and one small yellow, We took a short boat ride and found a ridiculous amount of bait. We took advantage and made about 200 baby hardtails, disco minnows and big eyed scads in no time. We put our baits out along with twenty extra ones and p ..... Read More
