Waterfowl Hunting Louisiana

Sherburne South Farm Lottery Hunt
I will be duck hunting Sherburne's South Farm area in late December. I've never been there and wanted to find out what to expect. The letter I got said to bring an ATV. What else do I need to plan on bringing? Any help will be appreciated.

south farm
I kill more birds in welsh, or point au chien, or a really cool rice pond in Pecanaire, but i like to hunt in the south farm for a quality not quantity. The key to hunting birds in LA now is hunt every where you can. I like indian bayou too. Hunt them all. Southfarm is the "bowhunt" like duck hunt. They do have ducks back in the hole where the trees are. Go.

february
Everybody has ducks in february. If these guys think that during the season that sherburne is loaded with ducks they need to stop hunting in the lsu lakes, because it is not loaded by any means. You will kill a few ducks if you have a good pond but if you draw the woods just tell them no thanks and leave. Good luck but dont think it is stuttgart or anything.

Ducks
I went snipe hunt after the duck season closed in february and the impoundments were loaded with good ducks. They didnt have thousands of ducks but there were hundreds and they were all mallards, teal, widgeon, greys, etc. It was pretty cool to watch them fly around.

I hunted about 6 times and we had 11 ducks one time out of two of us and that is the closest i saw in those 6 times i went. Saw maybe 6 mallards mostly teal. Not enough to get excited over

Great hunt
Hunting Southfarm is amazing. The key to success is in which section you hunt. Section 2,3, and 4 are always really good. They are some sections out there though where you just wont kill a duck. The birds generally stay in the main open impoundment and the "timber" holes don't usually produce.

sherburne
I wouldnt expect limits. I hunted it 6 times last year and didnt see one limit. It has gone down hill in a hurry over the last 5 years or so. Like they said game wardens will bring you and drop you off. I bring a 4 wheeler so i dont have to wait on them to see you but either way you have a walk.

Man, we never had an atv. The game wardens will take you right to the hunting spot and then pick you up afterwards. They have always been very nice and courteous. I've been there at least 5 times and always done well.

Bring the ATV
Dude its a mile walk to the impoundments why would you tell the dude not to bring an ATV? Plus who wants to carry gear that far, you need waders, i dont think hip boots will be enough. Its prolly a 20 min walk to the game warden camp and then a few more to the impoundments. I saw lots of ducks there the day after the season closed.

don't bother with the atv. you can only ride to certain points on the atv then walk. The game warden will let you take your time and load your stuff in the truck and bring you. After the hunt you just start walking out and they will usually pick you up. Bring Waders, 1 box of shells,3 dozen decoys, flashlight, license(with wma stamp) drivers license. Besides a bottle of water a call and some cheese crackers, thats all you need.....oh and a little luck. Have fun.Be safe.
