Capt Chris Moran
Offshore Fishing Louisiana

Snapper vs no snapper
TO ALL THOSE THAT ENJOY OFFSHORE FISHING!! This pertains to recreational, commercial, charter, tackle shop owners, boat dealers, fishing groups, outdoor writers, outdoor broadcasters, etc. ARE YOU WONDERING WHY YOU ARE LOOSING YOUR RIGHT TO CATCH AND KEEP FISH IN THE GULF? Join together and attend some NMFS meetings where these decisions are made about your livelihood or favorite past time. Do you know that many times decisions are made without a single person present to counter the arguement? Some of those that make the decisions have never set foot in a boat much less fish. Your input may be just what is needed to help them make the right choices. There is an abundance of red snapper in the gulf despite what the greener side may think. Don't tradition fall by the wayside without having your say. PUT YOUR TWO CENTS IN!! Thursday November 5 at the Wildlife and Fisheries building on Quail Drive in Baton Rouge the Commission will meet. One of the topics on the agenda will allow public opinion concerning state vs federal regulations. You are encouraged to attend but if not, contact the members by emailand let them know that they represent us and that we want better science before the feds punish all of us with stiffer regulations.

Also December 1&2 The red snapper advisory panel will meet at the Crown Plaza in Kenner (www.gulfcouncil.org)

Also Feb 1-4 the NMFS will meet in Mobile at the 'Battle House' (www.gulfcouncil.org)

Its kinda like voting, if you don't vote you really can't complain!! GET INVOLVED!!

Snapper Issue
Capt. Moran, this is an e-mail I sent to Congressman Rodney Alexander from the 5th District. I hope this will help. If there is anything else I need to add, just let me know. I am from North LA, but fish out of G.I. several times a year.

MESSAGEBODY: Mr. Alexander, I am writing in response to the issue of our great fishery, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Red Snapper season that has been shortened. This is causing a great loss of revenue to our state. People come from all over the country to fish in our waters which brings in alot of money. It also keeps our charter boat captains working and providing for their families. I realize that there has to be rules and limits on these and other fish, but the studies that determine the limits are far off base. Something needs to be done different to rectify this problem. The season was from April 21st to October 31st each year and a four fish per person limit several years ago to a 75 day season and two fish per person limit last year. I fish these waters several times a year and target Red Snapper. These fish are not in near as much danger as some of these councils want the government to think. I do not know any rules and regulations for the commercial fishing of Red Snapper, but they are very different from recreational rules and regulations. Would you please look into this issue and see what can be done to correct it. Again, I want there to be rules and regulations so these and other fish will be abundant for many years to come, but the state is losing alot of revenue in many ways over this issue. Revenue to charter boats, hotels, marinas, marine dealers, tackle shops, ect. Thanks for your time.

I missed # 15
As involved as I have been in this I missed the fact that #15 was on the agenda ............ who wants to eat a pasturized oyster? I heard the other day that the FDA's own numbers show that 30 people a year die from eating bad oysters, now that is a pandemic.

Getting Involved
Is certainly the thing for us to do. We are to the point in our country where we elect people to represent us well and instead they represent themselves and their party to the detriment of our country. This requires us to try to persuade them to stop doing something they should know not to do. The best thing for them to do is nothing.
