Waterfowl Hunting South Central Louisiana

West opener was lackluster, mixed reviews
I hunted opening day with Calvin Chaisson south of Houma with limited luck, bagging two teal and two mottled ducks from two hunters. Mosquitoes were horrible out there. Didn't see any pintail or mallards. I got a decent report from Sabine NWR from Chris Cole and Mike Reagle, but compared to previous opening days, it was definitely a step down. Mostly gads and teal. Damien Simoneaux did better than usual in the Little Prairie area, and told me earlier that it definitely surpassed the previous opener, and if the trend continues, should be a good season out that way. Limited out with teal and grays on the opener, and on Sunday, 3 hunters with 15 birds, pintail, teal, and grays.

A US Fish and Wildlife plane flies over the southwest Louisiana marsh US Fish and Wildlife has been making aerial duck counts for over 50 years US Fish and Wildlife amphibious seaplane heads out from Lake Charles

How does WLF count ducks?
I just read that article on the LAS homepage about Louisiana's duck count for 2009 and it got me thinking... How do they count all those ducks? I just imagine a Farside sketch of WLF Agents standing at LA's borders going "There's a duck... there's a duck... That was 3 ducks, Frank, did you get those? There's a duck..." Please someone tell me there's not actually someone out in the field clicking a counter that goes up to 1.5 million... Haha. You kow you've wondered this too! - Kyler

New Orleans Hornets Morgan City in South Central Louisiana

Hornets showing some life
Well the New Orleans Hornets showed they are not giving up on the season. After getting blown out by Phoenix with Chris Paul a while back, it didn't look good for the home team in the rematch last night--without their star player available. But Peja Stoyancovic hit 7 3 pointers and Darren Collison only had one turnover in 32 minutes, subbing for Paul, to go with his 15 points. Phoenix had the best record in the league before last nights game. The Hornets improved to 5 and 8 and should have some new found confidence after back to back wins with new interim coach Bowen. It is not known at this time how long Chris Paul will be out, but in my opinion, if they can play some decent ball and win so ..... Read More

baptist collette
Does anyone know what the shotgun sounds every few mins in the evening around marker 19 off of baptiste collette are for. We were camping and heard it both Fri. and Sat. evenings. Made me wonder if it affected the hunting in the area.

New Orleans Saints Morgan City in South Central Louisiana

The Saints this week
I was pleased to see the Saints pick up Chris McAlister this week. In my opinion, if he is completely healthy he can help us right away against the Bucs while Porter and Greer get healthy again. It would appear that Malcolm Jenkins will start and I am a little concerned about this. I am sure Greg Williams will have a scheme in place that will shelter him as much as possible, but as evidenced last week, an experienced quarterback will find the weakest link (Randall Gay) to exploit. It might not be too much of a problem this week against a rookie quarterback, but against Tom Brady on Monday night, I am hoping that Greer is ready to start and that is also where I think McAlister can help us. Opening Weekend
Opening weekend on our lease was pretty good. 3 hunters, 2 hunts (Sat and Sun morning)= 36 gadwall. I was happy as hell outright, then, after reading posts and talking to people, I was ecstatic. We didn't see hardly any birds, but almost everything we saw, tried to get in on us. Their mistake.

Age and score? Who cares! I know he's out there. I poured out a bottle of Deer Cane on the ground. My stand is about 10 yards or so to the right, just off camera. Just a matter of time. With a little luck and a silent prayer, zzzzzipp THWAACCKK!!! Carbon Express right through the side. Come on, come on...

"Jealous Of My Wife's Rack"
Last year was my wife's first year hunting. She had missed two deer and didn't kill at all last year. This year, I killed 2 does and a spike within the first 2 weeks of hunting. I wanted her to kill her first deer SOON! But not an Eight Point Buck! Needless to say I have been hunting for about 40 years and still haven't killed anything bigger than a six point. If I don't kill something bigger this year! I will have to look at Her Deer on My Wall for a year before I will have a chance to kill one that might be bigger than hers. So, I guess the question is "Does Size Really Matter"? LMAO!.!,! LMAO!

Atchafalaya Delta bow season
Well guys, my bow season so for has been rather slow. I was fortunate enough to take a nice 8 point on Oct 12th but before and after that day, the deer sightings have been few for me. I am hunting at a lot of different locations on both the perimeter islands and the Big Island. Other guys tell me they are seeing deer and I know of 9, 10, 11 and 13 point bucks all killed recently. I have passed on a few deer and had some more that I would have taken (namely one beautiful 8 point buck) that have not given me the opportunity for the shot. I checked my journal from last year and after the same amount of days hunted we had seen 47 deer and 25 hogs. This season those numbers are 20 and zero. Qui ..... Read More

.17 hmr
Someone has offered me a trade of a .17 HMR for a bow. I have the bow. I hunt up around the Bogulusa area and there are plenty rabbits and things, but what else can I really use a .17 HMR for? Also, anyone know of any land around Houma that I can help on to possibly hunt rabbits/hogs/deer?

Nice 8 point down
My buddy, Nelson Dupre, called me at 6:50 am this morning while I was at work. He was breathing very heavily and I wasn't even sure who,it was. He said, "this is Nelson!" I asked him what was going on. He said, "I just shot a big 8 point buck and I'm dragging him out!" He was some excited. He said the spread looked to be about 19 inches and the body weight was probably 180 lbs. He said the big buck was walking down his shooting lane right towards him at first light. He had to put the scope on him to see the antlers. He fired and the buck ran into the woods, but then back towards him and he heard him go down. Nelson hunts on his personal lease west of Alexandria. He won't be back to work unti ..... Read More

Lafitte Fishing Report
The water has been pretty low the last couple of days with the passage of a cold front, and the morning temps have been on the cool side. The redfish have made their way back in to the deeper holes with the lower water, and along the shoreline of the interior bays. The trout have still not made their way into Lafitte just yet, but they are not far away. With good numbers coming from the Little Lake / Bay L'our area on the west side, and the Bay Round area on the east side. They should be in our backyard any day now. On the warmer days you can still catch some redfish in the duck ponds with shrimp under a cork, or spinner baits. The bass fishing has been excellent as well with big numbers com ..... Read More
