Chris Morgan group come to Buras
Chris Morgan after fishing with us last month with his wife and two sons, came back down with some of his customers to see if we could pull off yet another fantastic fish catching trip again. Well, believe it or not---------WE DID!! Had Capt. Patrick and myself with the 7 of them, and after an hour or so of not catching anything because of slick calm and no water movement, I stumbled on a cache of nice trout and reds all in one place. Called in Capt. Patrick and we put a bonofide hurtin' on dem fishes today catching over 100 total fish including reds, trout and flounder all on Jimi Hendrix Bayou Chubs either titelined or under a CSI. The stage is set for tomorrows' trip with these guys ..... Read More

hydrafoils vs trim tabs?
i have a 16ft alumacraft with a 60 4cycle yamaha. i want a little quicker plane out the hole. it also sometimes bounces in the front, even in calm water, not always. what is better, trim tabs or a hydrafoil to solve the problem? i really would hate to drill holes in my transom(leaks), but if thats what it takes, so be it!! a hydrafoil is easier to put on, but will it do the job? please i would like your opinions, pros and cons!! thanks a lot!!! oh, and what kind of either!!

Pro's Pointers Question
Captain Paul - GPS Info Southeast Louisiana

Tommy J
I am looking for the Coordinates for Iron Banks in Black Bay. I have a spot on the Map, but the area I went to was some Iron Structers sticking up out the water. My understanding is that IRON BANKS does still have some land there. Is there two separate spots for Iron Banks. I am looking for the land and not those Iron Pilings and rip rap in the water. Thanks for any help.

IRON BANKS AND OTHER BLACK BAY FISHING AREAS
.
.
~ Captain Paul's response to: ~ Tommy J ~

IRON BANKS

The IRON BANKS are located in Black Bay south of STONE ISLAND and north of TELEGRAPH and PELICAN Points.

The general location is at or about 29° 32.810’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 31.850’ W. Longitude.

I say “general location” because the small islands that once made up the IRON BANKS is severely eroded from what it once was. I was told that the area was once used to secure barges while waiting to be transferred to oil facilities and that some the barges fell into a state of disrepair. Some of the remnants of these barges could be seen prior to hurricane Katrina between some of the several small islands that made up the area called the IRON BANKS. It is alleged that now there ARE only parts of the steel barge hulls protruding out of the water. The area had a shell beach around the islands and it was these shells and the Iron structures that drew the fish.

This location is about 13 miles across open water from the South Cut in the MRGO Rocks where Green marker # 59 used to be at a bearing of 233° Magnetic. While accessible from the MRGO, most people fishing the location access it from Delacroix Island or Point a La Hache.

The Iron banks are about 8 miles from the Green # 7 marker at the Mouth of Bayou Terre Boeufs at Black Bay when coming from Delacroix and about 4 miles from Sunrise Point when coming from Point a la Hache.

Other nearby locations of interest are:

STONE ISLAND

Stone Island is about 5.7 miles south southeast at a bearing of 165 ° magnetic from the mouth of Bayou Terre Boeufs at Black Bay and about 2.5 miles South Southeast at a bearing of 148° Magnetic from the southern part of Lonesome Island. It is also east of Belle Isle, and north of Iron Banks (islands). There was/is (?) a large radio tower on the island that can be seen for miles away. There where production and maintenance facilities as well as the radio tower on the larger part of the island.

There are several large production platforms located within 400 yards to the north and west of the main part of the island.

Stone Island once included what is now a small island that is located just west of the main part of Stone Island.

The northern most point of what is now referred to as Stone Island is at or about 29° 34.876’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 32.089’ W. Longitude.

The southern most point of what is now referred to as Stone Island is or about 29° 34.636’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 32.076’ W. Longitude.

The eastern most point of Stone Island is located at or about 29°34.791’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 31.881’ W. Longitude. An underwater reef extends eastward from this point.

The western most part of what is now referred to as Stone Island is located at or about 29°34.744’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 32.216’ W. Longitude.

The eastern most shoreline of the smaller island to the west of the main part of Stone Island is located at or about 29°34.659’ N. Latitude ~ 89°32.695’ W. Longitude.

When fishing the island, the wind is usually the determining factor. As the island is in open waters of Black Bay, the windward shoreline can be dangerous because there are large stones placed along the shore to prevent future erosion. I usually like the small cove on the southern side and the eastern most reef. Use caution in this area as the reef is usually just under water. Another “Must Try” location is the eastern shore of the small island which at one time was connected to the larger part of the island.

If the shorelines fail to produce, try the privately marked channel that runs east to west just north of the island. The channel in that area is marked by Aids to Navigation Day Markers and or lights that begin near Curfew Point with marker Green #1. The channel from this point continues northward, and then makes a turn to the west just east of the Stone Island reef at marker (Green # 13).

I usually anchor in the deeper channel water, which is about 15 to 18 feet deep and throw jig heads southward into the shallower bay waters. In the past I have found that I had better results in this channel between markers Green #19 (located at or about 29°35.000’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 31.969’ W. Longitude) and marker Green # 17 (located at or about 29° 34.989’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 31.590’ W. Longitude).

Remember that the markers are laid out as RRR. (Red on the Right Returning from sea) So the channel will be to the right or in this area, NORTH of the Green markers as they are positioned.

In addition, there are fourteen (14) small Christmas tree platforms that are placed in a north to south 1300 x 1300 foot a part pattern just east of Stone Island. I have had some success fishing the current side of these structures as well.

In addition to your request, you should know that there are several other small islands that have been known to produce fish in the area.

SNAKE ISLAND

The center of the remnants of Snake Island, now completely submerged and considered only as a reef is at or about 29°38.247’ N. Latitude ~ 89°33.861’ W. Longitude. It is or rather was about 1.4 miles south at a bearing of 181° magnetic of the mouth of Bayou Terre Boeufs at Black Bay.

Approach the position carefully and fish around the old structures.

LONESOME ISLAND

Lonesome Island is now reported to be only an underwater reef. It is located in Black Bay about 3.4 miles south at a bearing of 178° magnetic from the mouth of Bayou Terre Boeufs at Black Bay.

Use caution when navigating a straight line course to Lonesome Island from Bayou Terre Boeufs as it would take you over some of the remnants of Snake Island and the large concrete slab that once was on the island. I suggest that first do a dogleg for a mile or so to the east or west then proceed to Lonesome Island.

With that in mind, Lonesome Island is now really LONESOME. Erosion has split the island into two parts and is only sometimes visible to boaters at a low tide. The northern most part of LONESOME Island Reef is at or about 29° 36.807’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 33.732’ W. Longitude.

The break between the two parts of LONBESOME ISLAND reef is at or about 29° 36.711’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 33.700’ W. Longitude.

The southern most part of the south section of the island reef is at or about 29° 36.6189’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 33.631’ W. Longitude.

And probably the most intriguing is the end of the infamous southern reversed “C” reef of Lonesome Island. The southern end of the reversed “C” is located at or about 29° 36.334’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 33.758’ W. Longitude. Be careful when navigating between the southern point of the island and the end of the reef as the reef is just below the water.

And one final thought, DO NOT PASS UP THE OPPORTUNITY if you see BIRDS DIVING into or SITTING on the waters in any part of this area. ALWAYS approach quietly and drift or troll into casting distance of the last location where you saw the birds diving. If necessary, mark the position with your GPS and when the feeding stops, return back to your first position. Always have someone throw a larger, heavy jig head with something of a “Queen” size sure in to the frenzy, as the big boys will usually be deeper. You can catch a limit of trout on tandem rigged plastics is a few minutes when you find such a goldmine.

The BLACK TANKS (last time I was there only one tank was visible) can be reached out of Delacroix Isle, Point a la Hache and MRGO The Black Tanks is located in the Breton Sound ~ Black Bay area at about 29º 30.916’ N. lat ~ 89º 24.343’ W. Long.

The BLACK TANKS (last time I was there only one tank was visible) can be reached out of Delacroix Isle, Point a la Hache and the MRGO.
The Black Tanks are located in the Breton Sound at about 29º 30.916’ N. lat ~ 89º 24.343’ W. Long.

It may also interest you to know that a large concrete separator rig called “THE BUBBLE RIG” WAS just a few hundred yards NW of the BLACK TANKS. The rig has been moved but I have been told that the shell-aggregate base pad is still there. It seems that the shell base pad footings are an attractant to some species of fish in the area. The South east corner of the BUBBLE RIG was at or about 29º 31.089’ N. Lat ~ 89º 24.378’ W. Long.

Another similar location in the same general area is “The Wreck” in Breton Sound, which I believe, is located at or about 29º 33.633’ N. Lat. ~ 89º 28.507’ W. long. Use caution in the area. I have heard that the old rig is to be dismantled. Last time I saw it, it was dangerous to approach close in rough water.

For you information, I offer a GPS Waypoint program that I call CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE of GPS WAYPOINTS for the Black Bay area. This DELACROIX to PT A LA HACHE has over 250 different waypoints in the area.

THE CAPTAIN PAUL’s FISHING EDGE FILES ARE AVAILABLE ON THE LOUISIANA SPORTSMAN WEB SITE.

The “CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE” is a very unique ELECTRONIC MEDIA program that can be downloaded directly into various GPS units from their manufacturer’s Mapping program or via several of Maptech’s mapping software programs. This technology saves countless hours of having to manually enter each separate waypoint values into GPS receivers.

I call the Programs, CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE,” because I believe that they will give the fisher and hunter an advantage in getting to, finding fishing spots, moving around, and getting back from some of the more favorite fishing and hunting areas in the state.

The entire procedure of loading over 150 odd waypoints from a typical CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE file takes less than three minutes from the time you view the email file to the time that they are loaded in the GPS receiver.

Presently I have NINETEEN Captain Paul’s Fishing Edge Files. They include Delacroix to Point a la Hache, Barataria Bay, Lake Borgne, Hopedale to the Miss Sound, Hopedale to Bayou Terre Boeufs, , Bayou Bienvenue, Port Sulphur, Lake Calcasieu, Lafitte, Lake Pontchartrain, Myrtle Grove-Lake Hermitage, Empire to Buras, Leeville-West, Leeville East, The Pearl River WMA and the just released Vermillion Bay, The Rigolets, Bayou Sauvage NWR and Big Branch NWR areas.

To download The CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE program(s) in your GPS, you MUST have FIVE items.

FIRST, a GPS Receiver that can accept a computer download; SECOND, your GPS manufacturers Mapping Program or its Waypoint Manager software; THIRD, a computer with a connecting cable to the GPS unit or data card; FOURTH, a valid E-Mail Address that accepts attachments, and FIFTH, a CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE FILE.

Separate Program Files are designed for GARMIN, MAGELLAN, LOWRANCE, HUMMINBIRD, RAYMARINE, DeLORME, GPS receivers and their mapping programs as well as for MAPTECH TERRAIN NAVIGATOR. These Edge files are NOT interchangeable.

ALL of the CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE of GPS WAYPOINTS are ONLY available at the LOUISIANA SPORTSMAN'S 'OUTDOOR STORE'

The OUTDOOR STORE link button may be found in red banner on the left side of the SPORTSMAN’s HOME PAGE. The Captain Paul's FISHING EDGE button also flashes across the top banner of the ”REPORTS” pages on this web site.

And, of course, you may also go direct to the Captain Paul Fishing EDGE site by entering http://www.askcaptainpaul.com/fishingedge in the address bar of your browser.

From either site, simply follow the instructions for ordering from the Louisiana Sportsman’s Shopping Cart.

The EDGE files are available exclusively on the LOUISIANA SPORTSMAN web site in the OUTDOOR STORE. Look them over, I am sure that you will find that the EDGE waypoints give you a quantum leap head in navigating to and fishing or hunting the area locations.

Unless otherwise specified, all positions are stated as H,DDD,MM.mmm and were determined using WGS 84 DATUM. All Headings/bearings/courses are stated in Magnetic Degrees.

We went, we saw, we caught, or Pocket Lab did anyway.
Well ladies and gents, as ya'll know, me and Fliesitdies headed to Dularge Sunday morning. Well I was at a party of some sort for my cousin and soon to be cousin in law until about 6. I got a call from Flies when I was walking out my front door saying he was ready. So I went to pick him up at his house along with his boat and headed back to my house for the night. It didn't stop there, we swapped trolling motors (a 55 for a 28 lb thrust). We went and tried it out in Black Bayou and then went back home for 3 hours of sleep. We awoke at 3 and left the house for Dularge. It looked like a promising morning, we didn't get lost on the way and we got to Falgout Marina at around 5. We farted around ..... Read More

HOPEDALE/BRETON SOUND REPORT....
I had the pleasure to fish with Dereck Kennedy from the Monroe area. He brought along his son Cattar and Cattar's pal, Jake. They tried to squeeze in a trip before Jake's baseball shedule got too hectic. Derek was going a lot out of the West side of the state taking charters out of Calcesieu, but this time they decided to come down and give Hopedale a try. We headed over toward the channel and stopped on a structure and it was FISH ON! From the first cast to the last it was non stop action as fast as you can get it with some nice fish. It was Jake's first time ever fishing like this and he caught on quicker than I imagined. I needed some fish for the house so I told them to catch me a fe ..... Read More

The Breton Sound in Southeast Louisiana
Fishing Magician Charters Today we had 4 boats out. I had my two sons, Captains Jason and Jeremy, and my brother Capt. Lester helped me out with the charters. We had the pleasure of fishing with Jeff Reid and his friends. We all fished in the Breton Sound area. Everyone caught a nice box of speckled trout, some reds and a couple of flounders. All fish were caught on Campo's live shrimp and croakers, fishing 2' under a popping cork and Carolina rig on the bottom. Guys there are lots of fish in the Sound to be caught. But, it is very hot, so make sure you bring: a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a lot of liquids to drink. Capt. Jason was able to take some pictures of his customer's ..... Read More
