Child dies in Amelia boating accident

Two boats collided Sunday afternoon in Bayou Cheramie, LDWF says

A 7-year-old Bayou L’Ourse girl died Sunday afternoon when the boat she was riding in struck another vessel in a curve in Bayou Cheramie in Assumption Parish, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Jaidyn Montet was transported to Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City after the 2 p.m. accident in Amelia, where she was later pronounced dead, according to a press release.

A Triton bass boat with only one person on board collided with the 20-foot aluminum boat carrying four passengers, including Montet. The operator of the aluminum boat also was treated for minor injuries, the release states.

Agents with LDWF do not suspect alcohol played a part in the accident, and the investigation is ongoing.
