The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission took action on a notice of intent and declaration of emergency on Thursday to modify the recreational grouper season, and increased the minimum size limits for black and gag grouper from 22 to 24 inches.

According to a press release from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the changes are effective immediately so anglers can take advantage of the earlier season opening while rules are promulgated.

The recreational season for gag grouper in Louisiana waters will now open on June 1, 2016, and extend through Dec. 31.

The Commission’s action establishes state rules consistent with rules created by NOAA Fisheries for the federal waters off Louisiana’s coast.
