Video: Night footage captures speckled trout feeding frenzy

Specks wait for current to deliver bait fish

With April’s full moon last week, plenty of impatient anglers are finally heading into prime speckled trout fishing time across Louisiana’s coast.

With so many folks targeting specks, here’s a great video to whet your appetite in anticipation of your next trip — and also give you a good idea of what a school of trout looks like during a feeding frenzy.

Youtube poster TB Wild Images captured some awesome underwater footage of specks feeding at night in a pass between Treasure Island and St. Pete Beach in the Tampa, Fla. area.

According to the comments under the video, he used a GoPro Hero 4 Silver camera and scuba  lights to film the fish. The trout are gorging on glass minnows and scaled sardines attracted to his underwater lights.

The fish are feeding headfirst in the current, letting the water bring the bait to them. It’s amazing to see just how fast the trout inhale the bait, which probably explains the familiar ‘thump’ speck anglers live for just before hook set.

If this doesn’t get you fired up to plan a trout trip, you might need to take up another hobby.
