Toledo Bend public reefs are crappie magnets

Fishing guide Shane Johnson said May and June are the best months to catch numbers of crappie off the artificial reefs under Pendleton Bridge.

But LDWF biologist Sean Kinney said the 13 other public artificial reefs scattered throughout the reservoir also can be productive.

“Some are much better than others, but you can find panfish — including crappie — on many of them,” Kinney said.

Kinney also pointed out that the Pendleton Bridge reefs where Johnson fishes are illuminated, adding an additional night-fishing option for anglers.

But reefs sometimes can be overtaken with vegetation.

“South near Pirate Cove’s Marina, the Eagle Scout reef can also deliver numbers of crappie in the late spring and early summer, but historically this reef eventually gets covered by hydrilla,” Kinney said.
