2016 Louisiana Sportsman Big Buck Contest offers more prizes

Yamaha ATV, rifle and more up for grabs in 2016 contest hosted by QDMA

Now that hunting season has wrapped up, it’s time to make plans to bring your bucks to the Louisiana Sportsman Big Buck Contest to be held March 18-20 at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales.

Even if your deer mount isn’t complete, you can make arrangements with your taxidermist to bring the antlers to the contest. And there are even more reasons to enter the contest, which is sponsored by Yamaha.

It begins with the random drawing from among all adult entrants for another Yamaha Grizzly ATV.

But this year, contest host Quality Deer Management Association South Louisiana Branch is kicking in big time.

The group, which will run the contest, is donating several prizes:

• A Weatherby/Leupold rifle package to be given away by random drawing among all category winners.

• A gift card worth at least $250 to be given away by random drawing to a youth entrant.

Deer may be dropped off beginning Friday, but must be entered no later than 6 p.m. on that Saturday.

It’s free to enter — just bring your unscored deer from the 2015-16 or 2014-15 seasons to the show. Only deer from the 2014-15 season that have not been entered in the contest previously are eligible.

Winners also will be named in the following categories:

• Best Louisiana Gun

• Best Louisiana Bow

• Best Out-of-state Gun

• Best Out-of-state Bow

• Best Ladies

• Best Youth

• Best Muzzleloader/Crossbow

And your trophy doesn’t have to be a state-record deer to win one of the great prizes. Since everyone who enters is eligible for the drawings, you could go home with the four-wheeler, a rifle or gift card even if you enter a basket rack.

All deer will be scored by official Boone & Crockett and Pope & Young scorers. Of course, only those past the mandatory 60-day drying period will receive final scores.

Bucks entered in any previous Louisiana Sportsman Big Buck Contest are not eligible for the contest or the drawing.

Bucks killed in seasons before the 2014-15 hunting season can be entered for scoring, but are not eligible for contest prizes.

All entries will be displayed on the Big Buck Contest wall until the winners are announced March 20.
