Toledo Bend largemouth bass fishing guide Darold Gleason concentrates on the southern part of the enormous 80-mile-long reservoir.

And, while he is versatile, there are some things he really likes to do.

“Everyone knows how to fish shallow water near the bank and grass beds with spinnerbaits,” Gleason said. “What I like to do is teach people how to fish deep structure: humps, ridges, points, stumps, laydowns and brush piles in water 18 to 25 feet deep.

“Toledo Bend is like a bucket-list destination; people from all over the country come here to fish. What makes Toledo Bend great is that it offers different patterns. You can find water that suits your strengths. People who really love shallow water can go to the north end of the lake and fish in the brush.”

His guide service, South Toledo Bend Guide Service, can be reached at 337-397-8860.

Big Bass Marina is located on the Caney Creek arm of the lake on the Louisiana side of the reservoir.

Marina manager Gene Stovall said the marina offers 24 new or remodeled rental units, including five motel rooms and four two-bedroom suites, as well as cabins.

The marina, which is under new management, has doubled parking and added a new pavilion with lights, water and electricity. It also has extended the boat ramp for low-water launching, rebuilt the dock and walkway, and added a full-line bait shop.

The marina store is open year-round, and their restaurant is open from Thursday afternoon through Sunday from late February through September.

Big Bass Marina may be reached at 318-586-4721.
