Agents arrest Bayou Sauvage boater for DUI, drug possession

Girard allegedly launched his boat while under the influence about noon on Monday, LDWF says

Agents with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries arrested a Metairie man on Monday for allegedly driving under the influence on Bayou Sauvage in Orleans Parish.

George Girard, 31, was arrested for DUI and possession of illegal drugs, and was booked into the Orleans Parish Prison, according to a news release.

Agents received a complaint about a person appearing to be under the influence attempting to launch a boat at a public boat launch on Bayou Sauvage. They arrived minutes after Girard managed to launch, but immediately observed signs of impairment when he returned, the release states.

After Girard consented to a search of his boat and himself, agents allegedly found marijuana and a baggy containing a white powdery substance, the release states.

Girard failed the field sobriety test, and the suspected illegal drugs were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for testing.

A DUI brings a $300 to $1,000 fine and 10 days to six months of jail. Possession of illegal drugs carries up to a $500 fine and six months in jail, the release states.
