Hunters gain back one weekend with season now set to resume Saturday morning, Jan. 9, LDWF says
The Mississippi River delta deer season closure has been shortened to just five days — at least for now.
According to a press release Saturday from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the closure in the northeast and central part of the state because of Mississippi River flooding will will begin 30 minutes after sunset on Sunday, Jan. 3 and will continue through Friday, Jan. 8.
As of now, hunting will resume in the area 30 minutes before sunrise on Saturday, Jan. 9 unless further measures due to river flooding are deemed necessary.
However, hunters are advised that land from the levee to the Mississippi River in the area will remain closed until further notice, the release states.
Originally, the department intended to close the season from sunset on Jan. 3 through Jan. 11. That announcement was rescinded shortly thereafter to close the season for just one week, with the intention of reopening the season on Monday, Jan. 9.
Now, the closure is set to last just five days.
The closure will be from the Arkansas state line, east of U.S. 65 to Vidalia and west of the Louisiana-Mississippi border. Parishes affected by the closure include East Carroll, Madison, Tensas and Concordia, the release states.
