Majority of Atchafalaya Basin bass still released, LDWF says

When the minimum length limit on bass was abandoned in 2013, some anglers predicted loads of fish would be snatched from the water and released into Lake Crisco.

Some even predicted a crash in the bass population.

But the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said the regulations changes have had no real impact on the fishery.

“So far, it appears that it wasn’t the fish grab many anglers thought it would be,” LDWF’s Brac Salyers said. “We are currently looking at summarizing the creel survey the department conducted July 1, 2013, to Dec. 31, 2014, and so far the majority of fish harvested was in the 12-, 13- and 14-inch groups.

“But of the total of 178,000 bass caught, the release rate was 53 percent.”
