Elmer’s Island access road to close next week for repairs

Vehicular traffic to be prohibited Sept. 21-25, LDWF says

The access road to Elmer’s Island will be closed all next week for repair work, according to a press release from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

The road to the 230-acre tract of barrier beachfront, which is maintained by the LDWF, is scheduled to be closed from Monday, Sept. 21 through Friday, Sept. 25, for routine maintenance, the release states.

But Ashley Wethey, with LDWF, said boat access to the island will not be restricted.

“The island is still open, and if you can access it by boat, that’s fine,” Wethey said. “It’s just standard roadwork that they’re doing.

“That road gets pretty beat up and it’s not asphalt, so they’re just going in and putting gravel down where there are potholes.”

Vehicular traffic will resume once repairs are complete.
