Marrero man dies in Barataria Waterway on Sunday

Carr ejected and struck by his own boat, LDWF says

A 45-year-old Marrero man died Sunday after being ejected from his boat and then struck by the vessel, according to an e-mail from a Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries spokesman.

Adam Einck said in an e-mail that Shelton Carr was traveling south in the Barataria Waterway about 6:20 a.m. Sunday in his 17-foot boat when the vessel took a hard left turn and ejected him. The vessel continued to run and circled Carr a few times, striking him at least once.

The boat eventually crashed into a dock and sank, and Carr went under and never reappeared, Einck said. Agents with the LDWF and deputies with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office recovered his body about 12:30 p.m. that afternoon.

Carr was not wearing a personal flotation device or an engine cut-off switch, according to Einck.
