‘Jigging for Jean’ benefit rodeo set for Aug. 15

Proceeds help Capt. Bill Lake’s wife, who is battling Stage 4 breast cancer

A fishing rodeo benefitting the wife of long-time Terrebonne Parish guide Capt. Bill Lake is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15 at Jug’s Seafood.

Jean Lake was diagnosed earlier this summer with Stage 4 breast cancer, and she’s currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments through the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

“She’s in good spirits, and that’s a big part of it,” said Brad Lake, Bill’s son who is organizing the “Jigging for Jean” event. “We don’t really know a prognosis right now because we don’t know how the cancer is responding to the chemo.

“Obviously, we’re all optimistic.”

Rodeo tickets are $25 per person, and include a boat launch fee, food from Tony Chachere’s and Uncle’s BBQ Sauce plus door prize drawings. The rodeo will begin at safe light, and participants must be in line to weigh-in at 1 p.m. at Jug’s, which is located at 3282 Bayou Dularge Road in Theriot.

Prizes will be awarded for speckled trout, redfish under 27 inches, bull reds, black drum, flounder, the redfish with the most spots and the largest topsail catfish.

A live auction will start at 1:30 that afternoon, with rodeo awards immediately following.

In addition to the rodeo and live auction at Jug’s, Brad Lake has also organized a separate online silent auction and a raffle to raise additional funds.

Click here to see and bid on the silent auction items, as well as purchase rodeo and raffle tickets online. Most silent auction items will be available online through October, he said.

The raffle will culminate with live drawings on Sunday, Oct. 18 at the Woodman of the World Hall in Houma. Tickets are $20 each, or six for $100, and raffle prizes include a 5-day Caribbean cruise, five different charter fishing trips, ice chests and lots more.

“Everything for the rodeo prizes and the raffle prizes, plus the food, has all been 100-percent donated, and that’s really awesome,” Lake said. “It’s really been a great response.”
