Completing the ‘Coastal Trashcan Slam’

Sportsman TV teams up with Fontova to target less desirable fish

Tips and tactics on how to catch commonly-targeted species in Louisiana like speckled trout, redfish, largemouth bass, red snapper, sac-a-lait and yellowfin tuna are pretty common topics on outdoor television shows — but they definitely aren’t included in this episode of Sportsman TV.

Host Greg Hackney and producer Jared Serigné team up with longtime Louisiana Sportsman writer Humberto Fontova in pursuit of what Hackney dubbed the “Coastal Trashcan Slam” — all the less desirable species that many anglers catch, but don’t normally keep.

So fish like jack crevalle, hardheads, spanish mackerel, white trout, sheepshead, gafftops and ladyfish  were all fair game during a recent inshore trip out of Buras and an offshore excursion out of Venice.

And in case you’ve ever wondered on exactly how to clean a sheepshead, Fontova expertly demonstrates the proper step-by-step technique — including a great tip on avoiding the rib bones.
