Faulty valve might cause extnguishers not to fully discharge, BoatUS says
As boaters begin going through their spring checklists to make sure boats are ready for the spring, Boat Owners Association of the United States is urging everyone to pay special attention to their onboard fire extinguishers.
Kidde, in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, has announced a voluntary recall on certain extinguisher units. According to a press release, a faulty valve component can cause the disposable extinguishers not to fully discharge when the lever is repeatedly pressed and released during a fire emergency.
About 4.6 million extinguishers sold nationwide between August 2013 and November 2014 are affected by the recall.
Thirty-one models of extinguisher are affected, and they are red, white or silver with black plastic valves and ABC or BC rated, and manufactured in Mexico from July 2013 to October 2014.
Some affected extinguishers were specifically designed for the boating market and have a nameplate on the front with Mariner 10, Mariner 110, Mariner 5 and Mariner 5G.
