When to go fishing in March

Wind, wind, wind — March is a tough month for saltwater fishermen, but redfish is one of your best bests if you want to hit the water, according to Junior Mendoza.

But when to go?

“I don’t like west winds,” Mendoza said.

But any strong winds can muddy the water and make boat control difficult. A strong north wind also blows water out of the marsh.

“The day after a front is positively tougher — high barometric pressure,” Mendoza explained. “But remember: You can still catch fish.”

That’s not to say that you’re sure to limit out, but there are fish to be caught.

“A couple of guys may only catch five redfish rather than 10,” he said. “My theory is that you just gotta go. Going fishing is better than not going.”

He proved it on this day, which fell the day after a cold front, with blue skies wall to wall.
