Corps opens temporary bypass channel in Plaquemines Parish

Bypass in Doullet Canal will facilitate construction of new Empire Floodgate

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opened a temporary bypass channel in the Doullet Canal today to facilitate construction of the new Empire Floodgate in Plaquemines Parish.

According to a press release, the canal will close to boat traffic during construction of the floodgate, which is part of the New Orleans to Venice Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System.

Boat traffic will need to use the bypass channel for the duration of floodgate construction, which isn’t scheduled for completion until the fall of 2017. The temporary channel will be marked with buoys, the release states.
