“Clean Out Your Freezer Day” set for Sunday, Sept. 28

Event sponsored by Hunters for the Hungry benefits Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank

In preparation for the upcoming hunting seasons, sportsmen are encouraged to go through their freezers and share their leftover fish and game with the less fortunate this Sunday afternoon.

“Clean Out Your Freezer Day” will take place at several donation sites from 1 to 4 p.m. in East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Ascension, Livingston, East Feliciana and West Feliciana parishes, and will benefit the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank’s entire 11-parish service area.

Since 1994, the annual event has collected more than 190,000 pounds of fish and game, according to Amy Sellers, the food bank’s vice president of food procurement.

Sunday afternoon’s event also highlights Hunters for the Hungry’s season-long “Donate a Deer” campaign, where hunters can keep the backstrap and donate the rest of the deer to the hungry at select processors statewide free of charge.

“It’s just a great start to the hunting season because it’s providing food and helping hunters understand the whole program and what’s coming up over the hunting season, and how they can help and be a part of it,” Sellers said.
