Whoever came up with the “Eat, Sleep, Fish” T-shirt must have been from Louisiana. That’s because usually everywhere you find good fishing, good food can’t be far away.
Lake Claiborne is no exception.
There are several good restaurants in the area, but two are hallmarks in this area.
The first, Port Au Prince, is right on the water. This landmark has been on the lake since 1966 and features heaps of whole or filet catfish, hand-cut french fries, three-bean soup with jalapenos and homemade pies.
It is located south of Homer on Highway 146 on Kel’s Cove.
The second is Moon’s Grocery and Deli. That’s exactly what it is — a grocery and deli located in an old two-pump filling station store (remember those?).
And even though you can get a very good bologna sandwich anytime they are open, on Friday and Saturday you can get a huge grilled rib-eye steak or some delicious ribs. Sides are limited, and if you want a salad you have to bring your own.
Moon’s is located about 10 minutes north of Homer on Highway 9.
