Some reports of speckled trout biting along the southeastern shore of Lake Borgne are starting to trickle in, while the redfish bite in the Biloxi Marsh remains steady, according to a Shell Beach fishing guide.
“I’ve heard some spotty reports of specks being caught, but I haven’t really gotten on them yet,” said Capt. Jacques Laboureur, with Jakamo South Fishing Adventures. “People are picking up a few — it’s not crazy yet, but it’s promising.”
For specks, Laboureur suggested fishing the drains and cuts off of the rocks from the Lake Borgne shoreline protection project using a kamikaze Matrix Vortex shad under a popping cork.
He did say that he’s recently begun seeing baitfish — definitely an encouraging sign for the coming speck bite.
“A little bit of bait is showing up, not too much,” he said. “Mainly mullet. No pogies or shrimp yet.”
He’s been targeting redfish in Stump Lagoon and Muscle Bay with the same Vortex shad tipped with shrimp.
“Fish the windward shorelines, points and pockets,” he said. “Try whatever your favorite hole is. As long as we keep getting these southeasterly winds pushing water up in there, I think we’ll do pretty good.”
April’s full moon is on the 15th, and as long as Old Man Winter doesn’t have one more surprise visit in store for southeast Louisiana, Laboureur feels like conditions are setting up nicely for a solid speck bite.
“The water temperature is going up. Water clarity is good. We’ve finally had some southeast winds, which is great,” he said. “My one concern is with the cold winter, I feel like everything is behind.
“So we’ll just have to see how that plays out. But if we can get some warm days throughout April, we’ll be doing alright.”
