DU launches Beards for Conservation

Throw away your razor and take a daily pic to show the world your beard

If you grow out your beard during duck season, Ducks Unlimited invites you to participate in Beards for Conservation.

Since launching on Oct. 1, more than 6,300 people have signed up to participate and have uploaded more than 13,000 photos of real and fake beards, according to a press release.

“We know a lot of duck hunters take great pride in growing their beards during this time of the year,” said DU Web Director Anthony Jones. “The Beards for Conservation program is meant to take advantage of that excitement – especially among our Facebook audience of more than 756,000 fans. Our main goal was to create a unique and engaging experience that helps raise awareness of our conservation mission and encourage new memberships. It’s certainly been exciting to watch the program take off so quickly.”

To participate, users must select one of DU’s top five conservation priority areas to help raise awareness of those goals, including the Gulf Coast Prairie, the Mississippi Alluvial Valley and the Prairie Pothole Region.

Once logged in, users are encouraged to take a photo each day to show the world how much their beard has grown.

The Beards for Conservation apps, available free on the App Store and Google Play for iPhone and Android, allows participants to vote for their favorite person’s beard.

The program ends Jan. 31, 2014, and DU will be awarding prizes to participants based on a variety of factors, according to the release.
