Pirogues make good scouting tools

Hunting out of a pirogue is a great way to see and slip up on more game if you have a creek running through your property or lease, but a pirogue can also serve as a great way to scout for places to hunt on the land.

“I can’t tell you have many major deer crossings I’ve come across when hunting out of a pirogue,” Simsboro resident Sid Havard said. “You can see where they’ve obviously been sliding down and, on the other side, where they come out of the water.”

Knowing where that major crossing is gives you a bit of an insider’s advantage when it comes to picking a stand site back at the hunting club the next morning or a good idea where to hang a stand on your own property.

But Havard has figured out a little bit better way to scout out of his pirogue. Rather than park a truck downstream where he plans to get out, he hangs a trolling motor on his pirogue to give him a little bit more mobility.

“That way,” he said, “you can cover twice as much water, and then turn around and go back whenever you’re done.”
