‘The Whooping Crane’s Majestic Return’ to premier on LPB

Six-part series, Alive! In America’s Delta, also to feature Louisiana black bears, wildlife enforcement and endangered species

Louisiana Public Broadcasting is unveiling the premier episode of its new six-part series, Alive! In America’s Delta, on Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.

“The Whooping Crane’s Majestic Return” features the biologist team from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries who led the whooping crane reintroduction project based in the marshland south of Gueydan, according to a press release.

The documentary follows the initiative to reintroduce the whooping cranes into their ancestral south Louisiana home. With increased numbers, the bird could eventually be removed from the list of critically endangered species, the release states.

Documentary videographers worked alongside LDWF staff members as they worked with the cranes, even wearing the required crane costumes as camouflage to capture the arrival of the young birds at the White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area.

Future episodes in the series will explore Louisiana black bears, wildlife enforcement and endangered species on land and in the water.

Additional broadcasts of the “The Whooping Crane’s Majestic Return” on LPB are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug.  21 at 10 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 8 p.m. and again on LPB 2 at 9 p.m. Live streaming access to the program will be available on www.lpb.org/live on Monday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. The program also will be available on-line through the end of the month through the same link.
