Sabine Lake regulations differ between Texas, Louisiana

Road access to Sabine Lake in Louisiana is via Highway 82 approximately three miles west of Johnson Bayou.

When launching and landing out of the Causeway Landing on Highway 82 or the Johnson Bayou Landing (Deep Bayou Road) on the Louisiana side, Louisiana trout creel and length limits apply — UNLESS you are checked fishing in Texas waters (get maps and use GPS coordinates).

If Louisiana anglers launch and land at any of the Texas launches on the western side, Texas creel and length limits will be enforced.

Consult the 2013 Louisiana and Texas Fishing Regulatory documents for clarity.

If fishing Texas waters, the redfish limit is three redfish within a 20- to 28-inch slot limit daily creel.

“During a license year, one red drum over the stated maximum length limit may be retained when affixed with a properly completed red drum tag, and one red drum over the stated maximum length limit may be retained when affixed with a properly completed bonus red drum tag,” according to the regulations. “Any fish retained under authority of a red drum tag or a bonus red drum tag may be retained in addition to the daily bag and possession limit as stated in this section.”

In Louisiana waters on Sabine Lake, the usual 16-inch minimum, five-fish creel limit is enforced, with no more than one redfish exceeding 27 inches maximum total length.

There are differing creel limits for speckled trout as well, so anglers are advised to visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife website at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us.
