Young angler sets rodeo record at Cypremort Point

Alyssa Broussard’s 37.1-pound redfish stakes her to early Junior Division lead

It didn’t take long for records to start falling at Iberia Rod and Gun Club’s 60th Annual Fourth of July Saltwater Fishing Rodeo at Cypremort Point. Brock Pellerin, IR&GC president and rodeo chairman, said Alyssa Broussard set a new Junior Division record with a 37.1-pound redfish she caught shortly after midnight on Thursday. (The old record of 31.6-pounds was set by Jim Hewell in 2004.)

Broussard, who already has three Junior Division Best All-Around fisherwoman titles under her belt, told The Daily Iberian she was fishing with her stepfather, Ronnie Dore, aboard the Priority One when the big red chomped down.

“I’m excited,” she said. “I never thought that would happen… It fought hard. I had to wait a little bit to put it on the boat. Ronnie refused to help.”

So it was her catch from start to finish. But neither she nor Dore would disclose where they caught the bull red, or what bait they were using.

The rodeo wraps up on Saturday afternoon, with weigh-in at headquarters under the pavilion along Quintana Canal.
