Best turkey-hunting loads and chokes

Turkeys are big birds, so tight patterns from shotguns and hard-hitting loads are imperative. Shots can range from point blank to out to 50 yards in some cases.

For chokes, Atkins recommended the Primos “Jelly Head,” which has a 12-guage bore diameter of .660. He also suggested Indian Creek chokes that have a bore diameter of .665.

The author killed his turkey using Winchester Supreme High Velocity 3-inch shells that hold 1 ¾ ounces of No. 5 shot. Winchester Supremes have 1,300 feet per second velocity, and are available also in Nos. 4 and 6 shot sizes.
