Being such a large lake to fish, The Pen can be somewhat intimidating for anglers who have never fished it before. The question of where to start can lead to second-guessing if the fish don’t immediately respond.
Capt. Donovan Hinton insisted that south is best for trout and the east is best for redfish with the canals being best for bass.
“One thing I do not recommend is fishing the west, though,” Hinton said. “The west shoreline is all rocks, and I just so far have not had as good luck on the rocks. Nobody I know has done good fishing the rocks in The Pen as they have fishing the east shoreline or out in the middle for specks.”
That means Hinton considers a west wind as the worst wind for fishing The Pen because it blows right over the rocks and hits him full force on the east or south shores.
