Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1980 with the aim of saving and preserving “one of the largest privately owned tracts of bottomland hardwoods remaining in the Mississippi Delta.”
The refuge is representative of habitat that once covered 25 million acres of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley. The refuge includes 76,000 acres of bottomland hardwoods and oxbow lakes, and spans portions of Madison, Tensas and Franklin parishes in Northeast Louisiana.
Archery deer season on the refuge runs from Nov. 3 thru Jan. 31, but is closed during refuge-wide youth and general gun lottery deer hunts.
Anyone interested in hunting on the refuge should read and comply with all application and permit procedures as described in the Public Use Regulations.
