Sweet tea-looking water up north still salty

Anglers used to fishing the near Baffin Bay-looking water of Calcasieu Lake might be surprised to find Breton Sound-looking water the father they venture into the city limits of Lake Charles.

“It’s not the same kind of water up there that you’re used to looking at,” Capt. Nick Poe with Big Lake Guide Service said. “It’s black water but salty. I think it kind of looks like sweet tea — almost like it’s fresh water.”

Don’t let the appearance fool you, though: Poe said this water is saltier than it looks, as evidenced by how clear the water is even though it has some color to it.

“I don’t know the salinity,” Poe admitted, “but when you can see bottom as deep as you can up there it’s got to be salty.”
