Bayou Raccourci top DuLarge flounder spot

Capt. Marty LaCoste loves to chase speckled trout, but he’s also been known to bring in ice chests full of flounder.

Being a flounder man myself, I questioned LaCoste about where a novice angler might be able to find a few flatfish around Bayou DuLarge during the summer.

“We’ve been catching flounder in Bayou Raccourci,” he said. “It’s a known flounder spot. You don’t have to be anywhere specific, as long as you are in that area fishing any of the flats or any of the curves in the bayou.

“Do that, and you’re going to catch flounder.”

And Bayou Raccourci, which connects Lake Mechant with Raccourci Bay, has lots of turns, flats and drop-offs to fish.

Add in the current and bait that flounder just love, and there is nowhere else around DuLarge where you’re going to find the same concentrations of flounder to catch.

LaCoste hasn’t even been targeting the flounder. Rather, he and his anglers are catching them while fishing double rigs for trout up in the bayou.

He had a three-day, three-boat trip not too long ago, and between the boats they landed 50 flounder over the course of the trip.

“We’ve been catching up to 12 a day just slow-dragging single or double rigs on bottom,” LaCoste said. “I’ve never doubled on flounder, but I have landed a flounder-trout combo a few times.”

So if you’re looking to put a few flounder in the boat this summer while you’re down at Bayou DuLarge, give Bayou Raccourci a try. You just might forget all about the trout.
