DuLarge speck action ‘the best ever’

If you’re not catching speckled trout right now, it’s probably because you’re not fishing DuLarge.

Anglers fishing out of the Terrebonne port have been mopping up, with Capt. Marty LaCoste definitely not being an exception to that rule.

“We’ve been murdering them the last several weeks,” he said Wednesday morning.

The action has been centered around Lake Mechant, Sister Lake and Lost Lake, LaCoste said, and there’s a definite reason the fish are there.

“The lakes are full of shrimp,” he said. “They moved in really early this year.”

With the recent warm weather, the shrimp seem to be growing quickly. Until recently, they were really small, but this week, LaCoste has seen some the size of his finger.

All that bait has caught the attention of seagulls, and LaCoste is often using the birds to guide him to the trout.

When birds aren’t active, however, he fishes sharp slopes that drop off from 3 to 8 feet.

“You just kind of let the baits drift down the drop off,” he said. “Sometimes they’re on the 3 feet part; sometimes they’re all the way at the bottom (of the drop off).”

LaCoste has been throwing double-rigged 1/4-ounce jig heads tipped with avocado Matrix Shads and/or East Beast Killer Flats Minnows.

“This was the best March we’ve ever had,” LaCoste said. “It’s never been like this this early.

“And April hasn’t slowed down at all. It’s only going to get better.”
