Lots of public land in the area

You don’t have to own land to have a great time taking some eastern Mississippi deer.

Desoto National Forest has nearly 400,000 acres of land open to the public, and the hunting there is quite good, Scott Tynes said.

“The Forestry Service does a great job managing it,” he said. “Anybody can kill a deer there if they can afford the gas and the license.”

Also nearby are Chickasawhay and Mason Creek Wildlife Management Areas, which are southeast of Laurel.
